Hi all,
My dad was a member of The Delmonts who won Oppurtunity Knocks as Freddie Starr and the Delmonts in the early seventies, does anyone know if any episodes or footage of Freddie Starr on Oppurtunity Knocks exists?
Before he passed away my dad did attempt to find any existing footage but was told it had been wiped (unsure of where he heard this)
As myself and 2 of my siblings were born after his appearance we have seen never seen the footage and it would have massive sentimental value if we could.
Thanks in advance for any info!

I'm guessing any appearances - and your dad probably appeared twice, as they were winners, so one heat and one final - is missing. I think the year was 1970, as that was the year that Mr Starr appeared on the Royal Variety, if I recall, so it would not have been after! There are only about 12 Op Knox's from 56-78 existing in full. I have found a couple of late 70's clips on youtube.
I will keep looking, and I'm sure many members of this Forum do look for things regularly!

The winner of the show returned the following week and would keep coming back until they lost (I'm sure that painted man with the muscles was on the show for months!). The last programme of the series was an All Winners show, so a winning act would usually appear on three or more programmes. Update: According to www.merseybeatnostalgia.co.uk/html/freddie_starr.html, Freddie joined the Delmonts in 1965 "for a short period", so I'm guessing the OpKnox appearance would be '65 or '66. Nothing on ITNSource but it does have an episode of Who Do You Do? from August 1972 which features the Delmonts (as well as Freddie who was a regular). If your dad was still a member in 1972 then he should be on that. The bad news is that there's no online preview so you'd have to shell out for it (and it wouldn't be cheap). www.itnsource.com/shotlist//ITVProgs/1972/08/22/9L00998/?s=Delmonts~iw

Thanks for the information gents. I checked with my older brother last night and he said they were on in 1967 (which makes the Merseybeat site dates out slightly).
Apparently they won 5 times in a row heading into the end of series in summer 1967 and then won the All Winners show just after that.
Ian - The Delmonts were on Who Do you Do? a couple of times and we were fortune enough that these episodes were repeated on one of the satellite channels around 10 years ago so we did manage to get copies of those then.
Thanks again for the info.

Who holds the 1965 edition, Ray? Is it at the BFI, as with the 1968 show? Just curious as I didn't know about that one, although i'd seen a few t/r clips from a '60s edition utilised in a news broadcast when Green died.

Great that you've got those. Keep good care of them as ITNSource only have one, they might be difficult to replace. Shame about the archive status of Opportunity Knocks though. ~iw

Gosh I'm really thrilled that the 1975 songwriters competition episode still exists as it features my uncle Peter who co-wrote one of the songs - my family recorded it on audio cassette but I always thought it was missing from the archives!

Canal Plus certainly used to have some shows from ABC days - I was the film researcher on The Danny Baker Show when Hughie Green was a guest on it and I was got at least 2 eps in then. One of them had a Freddie "Parrot Face" Davis appearance in which the gag he did was practically the famed Monty Python Dead Parrot sketch, though pre-MP! Me & Danny were most tickled by this. Anyway, Canal Plus must still have them...
...doesn't help the original poster of this thread mind!

Very interesting, Mark. Thanks. It kind of confirms my view that the ABC t/r archive that Canal+ hold has not really been catalogued. I would expect some supposedly missing material to turn up if it was.

The first issue of my local paper, the Staffordshire Sentinel) for 2012 has a letter from a Ms.Rowley who was on the first Opportunity Knocks 'with Steve Race as the MD",and made a total of 5 TV appearances. I've sent a note asking if she,or any others, has any recordings of OP,etc.

There was an episode taped in Australia in 1970 (at Melbourne's GTV-9), in colour, which we wouldn't officially get until five years later.
It was an "international" edition hosted by Hughie Green, with local star Bert Newton assisting. A clip was used in a 1976 TV anniversary special - possible that the complete episode may still survive in the Nine Network's archives.
