Just want to add my congratz on finding these (and keeping a lid on it). One returned episode would have been enough to merit a real celebration, but two - seems to be heaven sent!

Also wish to add my congrats. I'm just amazed they were originally bought by the collector back in the 80s'. How come they were left idling for SO many years? I understand how things like transactions and copyright take a long time to sort, but really... Still, the Galaxy 4 is a real, left-field surprise. And we now have the oldest Troughton episode. Lovely.

Simon: As long as a film print is treated properly, the age of it has very little to do with the quality. Think about it - all of the Dr. Who T/Rs are from that same era.....
Mark: We don't have the oldest Troughton episode (Power (1)), but rather this is the oldest one we have.... I don't think copyright has anything to do with it - the collector just wasn't aware until recently that he had something that was missing.

Yes true but as time goes on film decays doesnt it? Anyway a fantastic bit of footage hopefully more episodes to come before the 50th anniversary.

Steven - I meant the Troughton is the oldest surviving now; NOT the oldest Troughton episode made.

Incredible news! Hopefully, with BBC Radio 2 confirming it on their news this morning, it might give some other collectors an incentive to check out their own collections and see if they have any material they didn't realise was missing! As this proves, you never know...

Yes true but as time goes on film decays doesnt it? Anyway a fantastic bit of footage hopefully more episodes to come before the 50th anniversary. Not if it was stored properly (and processed properly when it was printed). While it is true that acetate based film can develop vinegar syndrome (a breakdown of the cellulose acetate base into acetic acid), it's not that common, and it mostly occurs when either a) the print was not processed correctly, b) the print was Rejuvenated (a process whereby the print is dipped into acetic acid to remove scratches). or c) the print was badly stored. I've got prints in my collection that were printed in the 1920s, some 40+ years older than these Dr. Who prints, and they're all still in great shape...

But of course, we always have had the oldest surviving episode (it just doesn't happen to be the same one it was before this one was found) .... :-)

Actually, we have only ever had the oldest episode that we knew about! The oldest surviving episode may yet be waiting to be found! ;D

Since Im a continent away, I have never been to MBW. How many usually attend? Is it hard to get a good seat? What is the admission cost?
Would be interested in learning more.
