Hi guys, I am so pleased to have stumbled across this site and all the intrigue surrounding archive footage (missing or otherwise) from TOTP, and in particular that fabled episode from 16 June 1966. You see-I was there on that day! I was a cameraman at the BBC ('63-'68) and on that day was on "standby" which meant going in to TV Centre and filling in for anyone who had gone sick-I was not needed for duty so when I saw that The Beatles were coming in to perform "Live" I phoned my wife and invited her in to see the show. The atmosphere in the studio was terrific, even though we had no idea it would be the only time The Beatles appeared live, and my colleagues filmed me and Cindy dancing in the audience during the final number which was Frank Sinatra's Strangers in the Night. I wish I was now able to reveal that I have a recording of the whole show! but sadly not!! In those days it was a sacking offence to take a stills camera into work so it's miraculous that anything survives! I worked on many other editions of TOTP-here are a couple of pics from those happy days-points to be awarded to anyone who can identify the groups performing! That's me swinging the large Mole crane arm on the Christmas edition from '66 or '67, and driving the Heron crane on the other: picasaweb.google.com/112808227551845298728/BBCTVCentre60s?authkey=Gv1sRgCODou7ye4u6USg#5684809600705304290Here's hoping the rest of "that episode" turns up one day!

Hi! That's the Kinks. You can see Mick on drums, Ray in a jacket, Dave D with hius flying v guitar and probably John Dalton on bass. Probably Sunny Afternooon I reckon. The Kinks performance doing Sunny Afternoon exists. Check out youtube.

The other photo may be the Tremeloes.
There's a Tomorrow's world in existance that shows various camera lens being used on totp.

Well done Kevin, you win the points! that does confirm it as Xmas '66 If you look closely you can see something stuck to the side of the crane's weight bucket-it is a copy of our Camera Crew Xmas card (attached) That's me front centre! cheers Jules Attachments:

I don't think the photo by the O.P is from 1966, I think it's from the Christmas day broadcast 1965. The Kinks performing 'Tired Of Waiting For You' which was wiped. If you look at the decor it's exactly the same as the Sandy Shaw (rehearsal) performance that still exists from 25/12/1965.

Hmm... well... Ray Davies is playing the Fender Acoustic he used on the surviving TOTP appearance of Sunny Afternoon (he played electric guitar on Tired Of Waiting). I can't make out if that's John Dalton on bass or Pete Quaife but whoever it is is wearing a similar light coloured top to the one Dalton wore but playing a different bass guitar (it looks like a Rickenbacker...). Quaife had re-joined the band by November 66 Dave certainly had his Flying V by 1965 When did TOTP stop using that scenery ?

Nice to hear from you Jules, its always good to hear from someone who was actually at the recording of the programs we all long to see. Even if you don't actually have any footage from these programs you may still be able to help in their recovery. As you may already know a lot of missing TV footage has been recovered from ex BBC employees (eg the recently discovered Bowie footage) Perhaps you are still in touch with some of your colleges and maybe able to ask them if they have any material?

If there is a Christmas card on the camera then maybe as suggested it could be Tired of Waiting For You Christmas 65.
It's hard to tell as the Kinks are small in the background.

It was certainly great to be there, although the inclusion of Ken Dodd in that fantastic line up was slightly disappointing!!

It was certainly great to be there, although the inclusion of Ken Dodd in that fantastic line up was slightly disappointing!! His was the best selling single of 1965 and the 3rd biggest seller of the sixties, they don't make 'em like that anymore.

Yes I know, but hardly in the same league as the rest of the line up INMHO!!! If you'd asked me who took part, I would not have remembered K Dodd!!
