Buddy Holly's appearances on Dick Clark's Beechnut Show from October 25, 1958 is missing, even though the Beechnut Show from the week before exists. Buddy's American Bandstand appearance from October 28, 1958 also supposedly doesn't exist. However, audio from the latter does exist because Val warren taped it from the television via the direct feed. He also took a series of photos from the screen too that have never been made public. But where is the footage!!!

Early days for rock& roll and many of the middle aged running the TV didnt take it seriously and thought these guys with their guitars were just a bit of passing fluff. So it was all a bit hit and miss whether stuff got recorded or not. Holly's appearance on the London Palladium Show is also missing while Mario Lanza's appearance survives.

I have some footage of Buddy and The Crickets on Bandstand . It runs to about 10 seconds. Did they only play it once?

Actually they Buddy Holly and The Crickets appeared on American Bandstand twice - August 26, 1957 and October 28, 1958 all missing.
They also appeared on The Beechnut Show - October 25, 1958 - supposedly 'missing".
On August 27, 1957 Holly and Crickets appeared on the Ted Steele Show - missing.
I am presuming this 10 second clip is from Portland, Oregon from October 22, 1957, but I will need more information.

But where is the footage!!! The main reason why it doesn't exist, but the one the week before exists is because it was whatever Dick could rescue from the dump when ABC was cleaning their warehouse and started dumping many cartons of the Bandstand, Beechnut & Action shows. Then someone at the dump called Dick to tell him that "I got a bunch of junk from ABC with your name on it, and they want me to burn it, do you want them?" So off went Dick to the dump to get all the films he could. But when he got there, even after saying they'll save the films and give everything to Dick that they got, many films were missing or had lots of damage and the full library wasn't there. A lot of DCP workers speculate that many cartons had been dumped and burned already, which is why some shows are incomplete meaning that maybe 1 of 3 reels for an episode exist, some exist in full, and lots just don't exist. Whatever he was given from the dump, is what he has. It's a real shame that they got rid of them.
