Ray - The Beatles - Back In The USSR video - It's a collection of 60's archive made into a video used to promote the former bands re release of a number of singles in 1976. Splinter "Costafinetown" is the original previously missing 1974 promo film. On the subject of promo films I have also found from another source ..... The Spectrum (1967 Capt Scarlet Theme Band) "Portabello Road" - in colour. I agree that many "missing TOTPS promo's" have been shown in Australia in recent years which include such cuts as Kevin Ayres (Ex Soft Machine) "Carribean Moon" from May 1973. Back to Go Go Scope - the most interesting clip is Georgie Fame's January 1968 "Bonnie & Clyde". George is filmed in front of a black painted board in gangster outfit complete with 1920's machine gun. To his right there's a crowd dancing in a studio behind which is ...... a large above stage mounted back projection screen showing psychedellic moving shapes of the type used on TOTPS at the time! I see that GF did indeed appear on TOTPS in January 1968 performing that song which at the least is coincidental so this is a "possible missing 1968 TOTPS clip" Some very effective stroboscopic filming effects were used which time to the gun fire at the end of the track - quite a find! Regards Keith Keith, that's excellent information. If anyone knows where the Ayres promo or the Georgie Fame clip, could they perhaps let me know? I would like to ascertain - especially in the latter case if these are missing TOTP clips. (also, the same, for personal reasons in regard to Splinter's Costafine Town promo).

Hi Ray The Kevin Ayres promotional clip “Caribbean Moon” was shown originally on the Australian “Countdown” pop music show in 1975 and although the episode does not survive, as was the fate for most 1970’s Countdowns - the segment for Kevin Ayres does survive on ABC-Australia segment tapes, and was re-screened just once on a superb ABC series called “Rock Relics” – around a dozen or so ½-hour long shows were screened on a Saturday afternoon during 1986. The show has never been screened since. The clip itself can be seen on Youtube, with the “Rock Relics” intro screen. The show itself screened a whole host of very rare 1970’s promotional clips many of which do not survive anywhere in the world, except as part of the “Rock Relics” tapes. Many are the same as what is listed for the episode guide for “PopScope” so as last a 2nd source exists. I have no doubt there are many rare TOTP excerpts held by the ABC in Australia as part of their “GTK” archives – as over 900 shows survive on kinescopes from 1969 to 1974. Just recently, the super-rare Suzi Quatro “Daytona Demon” promotional clip was shown on Australian Rage on a Saturday morning - which originated from GTK. Like the David Cassidy TOTP promo, the film is very grainy due to it only surviving on kinescopes.

It's sad to think promos like that Paper Dolls one just could not be made these days, due to a combination of bureaucracy and Health & Safety legislation.
Although authority organisations were seen as lofty and aloof, and service industries as dour and inaccessible, what this did mean is that when such organisations were involved in far-out entertainment ideas, they really hit out at the audience and had a real "wow" factor. These days, all organisations bend over backwards so much to democratise themselves that, whenever a stunt is pulled (which again due to legislation usually has to be quite safe and unthreatening), the audience response is usually just "meh".
Oh, how to get back that feeling of the envelope being pushed, by what little nuggets from the entertainment industries we could get in those days, back before such things escalated into a constant backwash of media noise from which it's almost impossible to discern any dynamics of feeling or excitement.
