Hi Christian, It's more what does exist. Episode 1 & 8 only exist, the remaining 7 episodes are missing. Episode 8 is where they get there own motorbike (the triumph of the witch....lol). Davidxx

What a shame to learn that this is largely "lost" (or far more likely "gone for ever"). I vividly remember it and if we could ever see it complete I am sure it would stand up well.
I work just off Regent Street but even with Narnia overload from the Xmas Lights would love to see it again.

Judging by episode 8, I would agree that it was a pretty good adaptation (considering the studio limitations and animal costumes). I wonder if this was another fatality of the famous (or rather imfamous) tape wipings that Thames did in 1977/78 when ABC's VT's were shipped to thames and then Thames wiped and reused the tapes as it 'wasn't their material' ! As Homer Simpson would say...doh!

Was this the version with Zuleika Robson and Elizabeth Crowther? If so it's the first version of this story I remember.

It had Jack Woolgar is the pipe smoking narrator.
It just seems like a darker adaptation to what i'm used to. Aslan the lion comes across as more menacing and unfriendly. (Only seen episode 8)

Unless there was a version shown in the early 70s this is the one i remember watching at the time,i just wasn't sure it was 1967 .I couldn't wait to watch the following week's episode especially when they first went through the wardrobe. What a shame this has nearly all gone i'd love to see this version again.

Thanks Jeremy for clarifying the motorbike joke for Christian (people shouldn't take things so literally...lol).

It was repeated by Thames (not sure if it was networked) around the end of 1969 so it may be that you recall the repeat, Alan. I recall watching the first episode quite clearly in 1967 and it left an impression with me. A shame it doesn't all still exist though. Presumably the tapes were junked at the same time that Thames disposed of all the other ABC VTs, around 1976 / 77.

It could well of been the 1967 showing that i saw because i seem to remember them showing a trailer for what would have been a new series.

Presumably the tapes were junked at the same time that Thames disposed of all the other ABC VTs, around 1976 / 77. I thought the story was; as had been discussed at some time by a few. That ABC passed on a number of its VT masters to Thames also including PUBLIC EYE which the NFA took a sample of. But that a number of these tapesd were signed out by Technicians as having been loaned; not wiped as they were intended to be with Thames' newer shows. I think it was Kaleidoscope who traced a negative in a can which had episodes 1 and 8 of 'Lion' eidted back to back. So ther still is no answer what happened to the tapes. Pam Lonsdale said at one point Thames reassured her they had the VTs safely in their Archive. To take up david Steads point; it was incredible in view of the budget too. Much more dark and atmospheric than later versions. Pam Lonsdale had a way with getting spine chilling atmospheres into her shows I also recall that with 'ACE OF WANDS' (Seven serpents, sulphur and salt). Thames did do a tea time repeat I think late 1969, at the time we read the book in a Juniors school class. I recall it was run again from VT and the starnge still, sparkling quality to it. It would be nice if anyone can find a way to VidFire what exists. BTW if I'm correct episode 9 was the last part, where Aslan is tied to a square slab to be sacrificed? So that would follow the later existiong part. I think it's fair to say though it could never be done better, that version was very special.
