This was posted by Rich Angell over on the popscene forum..... The Legs and Co. Competition winner was a 16-year-old girl called Elaine Coombs from Salisbury, Wiltshire. This information plus a photo of her with the girls is in the photos section of that forum that gets a few mentions on here every now and then, "One For The Dads." Here's the link for it one-for-the-dads.979225.n3.nabble.com/Legs-Co-tp2078716p2834996.htmlJust a thought, I wonder if they gave Elaine a copy of the show?

Nice one Paul.
I'll let my contact know the mystery has been solved.
You never know the BBC may have given Elaine the copy they were supposed to keep in their own archives.

O/T but can anyone tell me what the rules were regarding live performances on TOTP? I'm asking because Elton John did a very convincing "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word"(including fluffed lines) on tonight's edition. I seem to recall that acts could sing but not play, but I might be dreaming that. At any rate most of them seemed to mime, and the muffle pads on the drums used to be a standing joke among my schoolfriends at the time !

The rules that started in 1966 stated that an act had to at least partially rework a song if performed on a TV show. This could take the form of a live vocal, a live full performance or a partial or complete re-recording of a song, or a song with additional MU members. This was only for numbers performed freshly and a film of what appeared to be a live performance (even if it wasn't) could appear, as there are many occasions this latter thing took place. Bands - the Who notably with Won't Get Fooled Again, faked their re-recording. They weren't the only ones.... The MU/Equity (they were involved too, you know) agreement with the broadcasters deserves further investigation....

Quote Dave Bartram from Showaddywaddy on the matter recently: "The tracks had to be re-recorded in 3 hours under the supervision of a Musicians Union representative (who were supposed to be on our side), it was a crazy situation, but most artists found a way around it by giving the rep a master tape that had been swapped for a much better version (sometimes the original master). The unions were very militant at that time and so self important. " O/T but can anyone tell me what the rules were regarding live performances on TOTP? I see this weeks episode(28/11/76) had a classic "produced by Johnnie Stewart" at the end.Think of all those 60's episodes ending with the silhouette with the stool. One of the legendary TOTP producers, along with Robin Nash, but missing from the run of 1976 repeats up to now,I think. Does anyone know which show had him listed as producer prior to this, and last show in this role?

Does anyone know which show had him listed as producer prior to this, and last show in this role? I'm not sure if he produced either of the previous two (wiped) episodes but he produces every episode for the rest of the year up to and including the two Christmas shows, before Robin Nash returns in January. I don't know why he was back for a brief stint.

Just watched last week's show (25/11/76) and was stunned to hear the Kursaal Flyers called The Kursaals : even the neon sign said KURSAALS. A lot of effort to get something wrong. Doesn't detract from the fact that their song, "Little does she know" contains the best line of lyrics ever written : "When she'd finished her laundry, she was all in a quandary".

I'm sure their fans called them "The Kursaals".

I don't know if anyone here has "long memories" like I do with regard these TopofthePops repeats, but a listing for 1977 has a performance by Television of "Prove It".
Now, I was a big fan at the time, and watched TOTP every week or nearly, and I don't recall this performance. To add injury too, it seems this is one of the few wiped 1977 shows.
So, I shall never get to see it, I guess. Unless......
Does anyone remember the nature of this? I can't find any reference to it other than on the TV show list archive on Popscene.

Hi Mark. I would very much like to see this performance too. The first I knew about it was when the TOTP database first went online around 2003.
It is strange that there is no other reference to this performance on the internet. With Television being such a fondly remembered and influential band, you'd think there would be a few recollections of this appearance on other websites, but oddly there's nothing!
I have asked other Television fans and none of them seem to recall it either.

Obviously it will be in other reference books/sites!
It's just surprising that no one seems to remember it (apart from Popscene forum member Richard Angell though he's not on here sadly).

I've not shut up about this since I joined this forum and was probably one of the fans Neil mentioned above. If I could choose one clip to have returned to the archives it would be this one; I thought I'd managed to unearth it a few years ago when I was offered a clip from the PVL, but when I asked for this one I was told that the PVL consists of incomplete shows and that this clip does not exist. I think I watched every TOTP in 1977 bar this one due to being on holiday that week. I remember the single climbing the charts and hoping it would be on TOTP but like Neil I only found out about it from the TOTP2 database, when I learned it had been wiped.
I have had a few chats with Ray about trying to recover this show but every attempt has been a dead end. I don't want to elaborate any further in case anything comes of my latest suggestion, but don't hold your breath.
I'm sure I read somewhere that the song was performed live, not mimed. It would certainly have been at least a re-recorded edit as the single is 5 minutes long. I tried asking on a punk site if anyone has an audio recording, but got no reply. Surely someone must have one as so many people used to tape TOTP onto audio cassette in those days.
