The biggest cock-up I heard was when the chart from November 1981 was played last year. When it got to Shakin' Stevens' "It's Raining", the same title was played by Darts - a summer hit from '78 and a totally different song!

I do remember that! Kid Jensen the other week featured 1976 on Smooth Radio and instead of the classic, Kiki Dee - Loving And Free, he chose Amorouse from 1973. I seem to recall Alan Freeman on Pick Of The Pops 1982, playing Madonna - Like A Prayer when it should have been, Duran Duran - Save A Prayer. I personally think, sometimes presenters change songs due to their own taste, rather than by error!

Though he just about gets away with that, because Loving and Free was the main track on a 4-track EP that also contained Amoureuse, I've got the Music in me, and How glad I am. Radio stations mainly played Loving and Free at the time, being the only 'new' track, but Amoureuse, the other A-side track, did get played too.

Did anyone notice there seemed to be tape roll in part of the Bolan edition just screened. Some of the other records on that one show how 76 seems to be getting to that mediocre point where many were falling asleep waiting for something like punk to happen.
I seem to recall the public didn't react well to the trendy mix of Ruby Flipper at the time and wanted Pans People back.
The troupe did include PP members but apart from Cherry and Floyd; who apparently went on to Hot Gossip; don't know what the others have done since.

I note Ruby Flipper didn'tlast long. A Pans people fan friend said the P P typedance format they replaced them with was voted to be called 'Legs and Co'which I forgot about.
He said the audience were clamouring for the more traditional type of dance troupe again.

"the more traditional type of dance troupe" = girls only, simple as that Something for the dads, as they say ;D

I think it was only 6 months for Ruby Flipper. Pretty much ignored by most people's history of TOTP. Usually only Pan's People and Leg's and Co are mentioned.

When interviewed by Radio One for the 1000th TOTP in May 83, Flick Colby said that basically Pan's People had 'gotten old' in 76, and she brought men into the fray a couple of years too early with Ruby Flipper. She felt that had she introduced that format in the aftermath of Saturday Night Fever it wouldn't have been a problem. When Legs & Co were replaced in 1981, there were male members of the Zoo aggregation that replaced them - but most of their routines did not involve all of the troupe as per the previous 3 dance groups - and half the time just featured people doing tipple-tails in the studio.

Great news via this week's Radio Times.
Owen Courtney, BBC4 head of planning and scheduling responds to a letter about the Top Of The Pops repeats. He says "We're delighted to hear that you've been enjoying the Top Of The Pops :1976 repeats on BBC4. I'm pleased to confirm that our journey into the hits of yesteryear will continue with Top Of The Pops:1977 from January next year."
Great news, looking forward to all the new wave performances. Letter of the week in this week's Radio Times and winning the DAB was about those annoying DOGs. Hopefully we can get BBC4 to ditch their logos before January. I notice Sky Arts shows are looking beautiful lately, no logos never!

I hated Ruby at the time but I think they're good now! More like the Nigel Lythgoe type set up. It was very much a something for the Dads set up then but nowadays the multi race unisex line up would be a requirement and absolutely in place with modern society.

I'm hoping one of the more informed members here can answer this:
Have we basically see all of the surviving 1976 shows or have any been skipped. It seems we missed the show when Legs & Co were named?

Legs & Co were named on the wiped 11/11/76 show. All surviving shows from April 1st onwards have been shown meaning that we missed 01/01, 08/01 and all the recently recovered Jan-Mar editions.

So we don't get to see the winner of the competition who was invited into the studio to reveal the new name? I was looking forward to that bit... I wonder how many 2011 viewers actually sent in a postcard to television centre?

Simon
I've asked someone who has a link to DLT to ask him if he can remember the name of the person who won the competition.
I feel sorry for the person who won it, there only moment of fame and the Beeb wipes this edition!!
I'm suprised the person concerned hasn't been tracked down in the past that's assuming the person concerned is still alive without wishing to sound morbid.
