Hi Jeff, A possible answer to your query about the quality of the picture & audio of the 1976 repeats. They were all mostly from surviving original tx 2"CVT, whereas the majority of the 1980's and the early 1990's were from 1"CVT which is inferior quality. There's almost no difference to watching 2"CVT and Digital D3/Digibeta. There certainly is when you watch 1"CVT (well at least from the viewpoint of someone having worked in TV that is - Generally 'joe public' would probably not notice a lot of difference). One way you can tell quality difference is with Eastenders, which in the early days was shot on BetaSp and transferred to 1"CVT to transmit. That's why all the early ones look so 'noisy' (ie poor quality pic). Since using digibeta to record and transmit, the quality is like being back in the land of 2"CVT! Hope that helps

I couldn't agree more I've been waiting for Can too as by the sound of it many other people on here and other sites - and as arguably one of the most influential groups to ever feature on the show I would certainly ARGUE about Can being one of the most influential groups to feature on TOTP : very much a 'niche' "Johnny Foreigner has a go at prog rock" band. I well recall some of my "up themselves" friends at the time going mad about them. Totally inconsequential.

Good grief, of all the clips to excise from a truly awful year of pop and rock. “I Want More” was by no means yer classic Can, they were very much past their peak by then, but even so, that’s a shocker of a decision.

I notice Kevin and Mike didn't appear in the third performance (5th August 1976) Just to say, they did actually, but they were on the floor surrounded by the audience so they were barely in shot. Hardly worth them turning up. My favourite of the performances is the second where Martin Jay appears to start blowing into his talkbox before realising it's not actually there.

In their defence, the Can clip had been featured on some other shows, TOTP2 certainly, so maybe that's why it got dropped in favour of RobStarstedt, who nobody would ever use to include in a show of TOTP highlights...

Thanks Chris. An interesting piece. So there is some kind of official word now on BBC attitude to towards King and Glitter. Let's hope they do indeed include future appearances without tampering.

It's certainly set alight the "comments" section of the article, Laurence. What I do find interesting now is the amount of people admitting to the fact that GG's tunes were good and the ability to separate the man from the music.

Interesting to read that Linda re-recorded Tina's 5000 Volts tracks, it explains what's been puzzling me for a few weeks - on Pick Of The Pops recently, Tony Blackburn played I'm On Fire and mentioned Tina was the vocalist - and yet the song sounded different and not like Tina - it must have been Linda's version he played (not his fault!)

I was also disappointed with 5000 Volts, played on Pick Of The Pops. I don't know who sung that version but sounded nothing like Tina Charles. At least on Kid Jensen's double top 20, he played the original!

At least on Kid Jensen's double top 20, he played the original! Coincidentally, the wrong version was also played by Stephen Foster on BBC Radio Suffolk 2 weeks ago on a 'flashback' programme that he presents. Foz is a real 70s anorak (like me) and rarely gets things wrong, so I assume he had innocently sourced the track from the standard BBC database and came a cropper. Anyway, I let him know the error, and last week he apologised on air and promised to play the correct version next time! Top man.

On the same show which Kid Jensen played 5000 volts, he boobed with Band Of The Black Watch - Scotch On The Rocks. I can 100% guarantee, that was not the original chart version played. I have the original and it's far superior, maybe that was the only version he could find!

Sorry I've caused this thread to go off topic, but I wonder if Radio 2 have corrected the problem they had with their computerised recording of Rod Stewart's Reason To Believe - whoever copied it cut it off at the false ending! These re-recordings can be a problem - back in the 70's Jimmy Savile (I think) played a more recent version of the Cascades' Rhythm of the Rain, which was a completely different arrangement.
