Some good news for you to go to bed on. I've recently discovered another piece of the No Hiding Place jigsaw. Sadly incomplete like so many episodes, the last twenty or so minutes worth, but another example of one of the nation's favourite shows of the 60s. Many thanks to Clyde Miles for taking care of this print. It's Series 4, Episode 23. Time to Kill (Written by Dennis Spooner) More info and a clip for your enjoyment here: bit.ly/nhp-time2

This is excellent news indeed Tim.Thanks indeed for sharing this bit of classic Rediffusion TV material!Looking forward if possible to seeing the rest of this footage uploaded?Excellent work here,to be highly commended.Have good taste,I like a lot of early Rediffusion myself.Keep up the good work, and thank you for the posting here.So far,2010 is off to a great start with the 1970 edition of Scene,Bus Stop TOTP footage discovery, and now No Hiding Place footage from 1962 in great quality might add.Looks to have been taken from a film source as some tram-lines as well as dirt/grime are evident in the recovered footage.
Thanks Again!!
Cheers,Lance.

Hi Lance, you're right. The remaining footage exists as a film recording and that bit with the car by the looks of it was filmed on 16mm stock on location. So effectively it's double the possible amount of film artifacts. Matthew, my pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed the clip. Here's to a very good 2010!

Thanks Chris. You're right. Rediffusion has become a bit of a personal mission. ;D You must be on a mission for me personally then, Tim! Clawing back as much of the Rediffusion archive as possible is the thing I wish for most of all with missing TV as so much of it has gone and the company formed such an important part of TV's landscape in the '60s when I was growing up. Well done on this and let's hope for a cache of Rediffusion recoveries sometime. In the meantime, i've added this one to the 2010 discoveries thread.

Can we take it that the main mission here is to send this material off to the BFI as soon as possible? If so, then many congratulations indeed.
Cheers,
Simon

Thanks for finding this one, Tim. 2010 has started well with some new discoveries surfacing. I guess though, Simon, that the B.F.I. sadly may prove indifferent to taking back more No Hiding Place as has been the case with other missing items before. They seem to have a priority list of what they want and only cherry pick other things that are offered. I hope I am wrong on this but it is only through collectors like Tim taking the time to seek such material out (and sharing the knowledge of the finds with us all) that it is assured of a good home if the official archives don't want it.

No, that's quite wrong, Dave, from my own personal experiaence.
I've lent them loads of progs, many of which were obscure Rediffusion and other ITV documentaries.
They gratefully borrowed, and copied, all of them.
Many rumours about the BFI are wrong.
Holding something in private hands only can never be considered a recovery at all.

Dont Tell the BFI its No Hiding Place but tell them its 11 frames of Charlie Chaplin scratching his arse and they will put the red carpet out for you and give it its own gold plated can and shelf with its own flunkie.

You got it there in one, Peter ;D
No, I didn't say that it was a recovery, Simon. I don't think it says so any where here. It's a discovery, which is different. The thread on 2010 finds doesn't say so either.
Your lucky experience of the B.F.I. is different to other people's because they do not take everything they are offered. An example is the two final ABC programmes made in 1968, which are clearly of historical importance, but the B.F.I. were not interested for some strange reason. Kaleidoscope hold many masters as Steve Bryant admitted at the missing believed wiped event in January that they have space limits anyway and have to prioritise. We know this has been going on for years but only now are they conceding it though. Television has naturally never been their priority but they need to be honest about this.

This isn't with the BFI yet, but will be when I've got another batch of material to offer. They do prioritise drama and I, like you Simon, have found that they've taken everything I've offered them in the past. That includes other episodes of NHP, and many other Rediffusion bits and pieces. However, they do get a bit of a bad press at times.
The print has been telecined to a digital format and as with all my prints is in professional secure storage off site. Not a shed as featured in that abysmal Missing Believed Wiped interview a few years back. You'd have to be mental to store film in a shed. Digital masters are stored at another off site location and I only keep B.I.T.C DVD screeners at home for reference in case of fire, plague or pestilence. I'm in the very long process of making digital masters of all of my prints at the moment so that I can eventually do a bit of dust busting and digital restoration. It is a very, very time consuming process that has to be done on an "as and when" basis.
