This is great news! it would be good if this find could be publicised in America as a news story (maybe on BBC America) as i would highlight the search for lost clips in a country that could well hold many lost UK programs

As others have said, absolutely great find. Very atmospheric - TOTP clips from '66, as we all know, are somewhat of a rareity!
This is also one of my favourite Hollies tracks as well....
Does anyone know if this was TV Centre or Lime Grove? I am perhaps, guessing Lime Grove, due to the 'set', but I know TOTP moved to TVC in Jan 66, so just curious!

I just had a look at the same YouTube poster's clip of the colour John's Children promo. I've seen this before on YouTube but in a badly mangled state - good quality but chopped up so it was never in synch. Here we can see it in perfect synch as it was originally made. Great to see it!

The Hollies clip originates from the show aired on BBC1 on Thursday, June 16, 1966. The guy who posted it on YouTube does not have The Beatles (or anyone else) from that particular show, sadly.
The Bus Stop item was sent out by the BBC, at the time, as a 16mm telerecording, incredibly, to be in used in an item we would now call a video-jukebox. The Corporation was actually sending out other TOTP clips on a fairly regular basis back then, usually for screening on a foreign TV programme. Examples we have include: Manfred Mann (1966 & 1967), The Walker Brothers (1966), Jimi Hendrix Experience (1967), The Kinks (1966, 1967 & 1968), The Who (1967 & 1970), all of which still survive. About 12 years ago, this lead was chased through the Beeb; they did not reply. Incredibly, despite the fact the BBC have one of the world's great written archives, there is no record whatsoever of them ever doing this. No one at the BBC was even aware they did this back in the 60s! The first time they recognised this happened was when ZDF in Germany officially started taking clips for their show Disco in 1971. (One of Paul McCartney & Wings' contracts for TOTP even made a reference of the fact their performance could well be screened on the programme.) But before then, nothing. In other words, the BBC sent clips out to whoever asked for them and did not feel it was worth keeping a record of it and such was the case with the Bus Stop clip. There are numerous other missing TOTP clips like this still out there waiting to be recovered. In fact, there are many supposedly missing clips from the show still sitting in the Beeb's own archives now, only they are not aware of them!

Thanks you for telling us this, Ray. It is the first I have ever heard of Top of the Pops clips being sent out for video jukebox use and it increases the possibility of many more items being in existence and explains the survival of a few others I had always wondered about. Were they sent out on 16mm? They will be good quality if so. I hope someone in an official capacity chases this up. I also hope the BBC search their own archive a bit more, from what you say Ray! The other question is who has all these clips now and why have many not turned up so far?
Who would have thought that this Hollies clip would turn up on it's own out of the blue? That means the complete edition of 16th June with this item in too, is out there somewhere! I do hope it turns up as it was a great time for music and it is clearly seen in clips like this and also the ones screened on the South Bank Missing Believed Wiped event in January. British pop was leading the way and I do believe Top of the Pops was at a high point in 1966 and 67.
A new avenue to check for potential Top of the Pops recoveries is discovered! Yippee!
Dave

The 16/06/66 may well be in a private archive SOMEWHERE in the US and Canada. Enquiries are ongoing, believe me!

Am wondering about Haydock's appearance in the clip.. was it previously known among Hollies archivsts that he was back in the band at this point? Reading up online about it, it seem Haydock was fired in April 1966, with Klaus Voorman filling in onstage for a bit, before Bernie Calvert joining in time to record Bus Stop in June.. could it be possible that Calvert wasn't a permenant replacement, and Haydock had a period of probation before being fully dismissed? Or, was he doing a favour to the band (similiar to Pete Best playing a pre-booked Beatles show after being sacked in 1962) when Calvert couldn't make the gig? And didn't Jack Bruce fill in on bass on the next single (After the Fox)

I think Jack Bruce plays on that.
Maybe he was doing a favour to them, maybe it was semi-pre-arranged, maybe he just fancied the appearance fee. I think we'd have to ask Mr Haydock!

Has this been looked into yet? At the moment i wouldnt say a compressed youtube link was a find. We need someone to get ahold of a uncompressed copy and give it back to the BBC

I agree, this clip has been located but it is still missing from official archives. I hope someone is chasing the film to return it to the BBC?

Someone IS talking to the YouTube poster.
What I will say - and you may disagree, and feel free to - but as we all know even when the BBC have been sent copies of stuff in recent years they have then proceeded to lose things, so should anyone have the technical nous to download the clip from YouTube, burn it to CD, and then send it to the BBC - low resolution or not - at least SOME SORT of copy will exist that way at the Beeb for certain!
One of the reasons that a lot of clips do survive is because those of us who collect and/or trade footage have it circulated to ther collectors so it does end up in the public domain of sorts.
But rest ASSURED that one of my contacts IS in touch with the YouTube poster and I will keep people informed of ANYTHING if and when I know ASAP!
