WOW!!!!!!!!!!! The three 60s shows for me are the find of the year!
Anyone know the full details of these shows? Of the 2 67 shows which bits are missing, is it the end, beginning or something else? Are these the original tapes or home recordings?

A clip of Splinter performing "Costafine Town" live on OGWT was shown on the 1974 edition of "The Whistle Test Years".

Splinter is a great recovery for many of us Beatles fans - George Harrison plays the vast majority of instruments on the song - and the Sparks footage is also hugely welcome.

Just to add my comments here about the recovery of this TOTP material, particularly the '67 and '69 editions! According to the PasBs, Pink Floyd actually appeared in three editions at this time (6/7/67, 13/7/67 and 27/7/67) so I guess that the part of the latter edition featuring them is missing (?) There were a few editions around this time that were shorter than normal, one of which contained a Floyd appearance - possibly the 27th July show, meaning there shouldn't be much missing from this one! I hope something can be done to minimise the faults in these recordings to a degree. I'm really pleased the material is getting a screening in the near future though.
The '74 material is also of great interest too, being a Sparks fan myself (I wonder why Dick Emery taped this one? Thanks Dick!). If the recording came from U-Matic, i'd expect it to be pretty good quality. By the way, I must put in a mention here for the Bob Monkhouse event last Saturday: I completely was blown away by the quality of much of the full colour Philips 1500 material screened; a far better format than most domestic types, looking semi-pro quality. I'm eagerly awaiting full screenings of some of this material!

So, are the 67 part editions "VT" quality?
Also, does anyone know what sort of state the recovered March 1969 edition is in?

You mean broadcast quality VT or VHS quality VT? There's a world of difference. More the latter though, i'd think.
The '69 edition is from a CV-2000 reel so early b/w home reel-to-reel. Quality can vary drastically depending on how the tape has aged / been stored. Also, it depends on if the recordings have been optically transferred from the original reel. As a rough guide, the Steptoe episode "My Old Man's A Tory" is an example of a reel-to-reel recording from roughly the same time (optically transferred) which i'd call very good quality for a recording of this type. These kind of recordings can be good but often prone to breakups, picture rolls, tracking problems etc. although no mention was made of the '69 edition having any really bad faults so expect it to be reasonable quality but with occasional glitches / break-ups (it seems to be complete though). I don't know what format the '67 recordings originated on or how they've been copied over but as these are noted as having severe defects, don't expect miracles! Perhaps Chris Perry can elaborate further?I'd like to know more as well.

This is indeed interesting news. I am very curious to see the 67 floyd footage. Even if the quality isnt perfect, it will still be awesome to see a little bit of it Well done to all involved in this recovery.

If only it were June 16th 1966.... I think that's long been the number one most wanted to be recovered TOTP with the Pink Floyd editions at number two. The fact these latest discoveries have turned up gives one some hope since we do know there IS a print of 16-6-66 out there somewhere... just a matter of time before whoever has it comes forward. I know that's most sought after thanks to The Beatles but for me... I'd dearly love to see the studio performances by The Kinks, Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, Wayne Fontana, Gene Pitney and The Yardbirds as much as The Beatles... I mean, what a killer line up for just one edition! All great records as well!

What great news this is Does anyone have further info on what parts/performances of the '67 editions have been saved?, and what is the future for these editions and the other finds? return to BBC/ITV for possible broadcast?.

the bbc should do another 'mbw' show seeing how much has happened since the last one. maybe a whole night on bbc 4 dedicated to it. the stories behind how these lost bits came to be & surface after so long are almost as interesting & unknown as the material itself!

agreed this is brilliant news but when will we get a chance to see them apart from the missing believed wiped event?

agreed this is brilliant news but when will we get a chance to see them apart from the missing believed wiped event? Well, if the BBC have access to these shows and even if they were restored as much as possible, I still wouldn't hold my breath for this material being shown on the BBC any time soon. Which is a great shame. I'd love to see it all
