Hope no-one minds me plugging this but I've compiled a top 10 missing cult TV shows list for website Den of Geek which you can find here: www.denofgeek.com/television/226764/10_missingfearedlost_tv_shows.htmlWhat do you think? Have I covered the main contenders, or do you reckon I've missed some worthy candidates? I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

They're mostly stuff i'd put on a "key missing series" list too but it all depends on what your definition of 'cult' is. This list seems to be all SF plus Hancock added for good measure! I'd include a lot of other series too that could arguably have a cult following of one kind or another, such as missing pop music tv, early Public Eye and Callan eps etc. etc.

Yes, when is something cult? First thing on my mind is SF and horror, and vintage stuff. But I saw "The Shawshank redemption" listed as a cult movie a while ago. And I always considered that mainstream.

I wouldn't personally put Counterstrike as a 'cult' programme because I have never heard anybody lament about it. Poorly produced old tat that got taken off the air before its time IIRC, but obviously it has now earnt its place in history and deserves a full place if possible on the shelves. I am surprised that BBC programmes feature more prominently in alsorts of lost programmes lists , when infact ITV (in 1950/60s at least) were producing programmes with very high production values compared to the BBC. The Adventures Of Sexton Blake (ABC/Thames) is all but lost now, it was hard to believe that this was meant for children with the attention to detail and the effort put in by the crew to make an exciting serial, and the fact that Lawrence Payne was thought to have badly damaged an eye in a fight scene, makes it even more scandalous that his truly gigantic sacrifice was worth just a half an hour of screen time and then gone forever. These quality dramas too will never make any list because they were on for an hour in the sixties and thats it gone. The Informer (Rediffusion) Sanctuary (Rediffusion) Vendetta (BBC) Mystery&Imagination (ABC) and loads more no doubt

And I always considered that mainstream. I've thought about your question, which is a good question ! There are a lot of things that are defined as 'cult' but they also are popular/mainstream. I think that it's the fans that make something 'cult'; something like Dr Who has to be mainstream/popular - it wouldn't have been the 'flagship' of Auntie's Saturday evening line up for so long if it couldn't get an audience. However, Dr Who is also 'cult' as it attracts extremely loyal, even obsessive, fans who can get completely carried away by the show. I may be wrong but I don't think that shows like Consternation Street, Eastenders, Emmerdale, etc generate the same kind of response in the fans. That's my 2 Euros worth !

Surely shows like Crossroads; Corrie & Emmerdale have their obsessive fans who visit locations; write to the characters with their personal problems; etc?
Why do a lot of comedies fall under the "cult" umbrella?
What is something like Z Cars?
A lot of lost one off plays are "cult"

Suppose RENTAGHOST would be a common one. Also remember a series about Guys in Lorries having various adventures. Was it called "THE BROTHERS", or am I thinking of something else. I wish shows like NEW FACES, WHO DO YOU DO, OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS were properly archived for all to enjoy. Along with the obvious ones, LIFT OFF, TOTP, etc. We could have done with a few Germans in charge of the two main TV Giants. Ive got a ton of the excellent DISCO, MUSIKLADEN, BEATCLUB shows. Anyway, my main cult favourite as a kid is now obviously released officially, and is in my ( and I suspect a lot of you guys ) personal collection.......TIMESLIP.............WHOOOOOOOO.

At Last the 1948 Show, Do Not Adjust Your Set ... DNAYS, yes. But most of the 1948 show still survives, I'm guessing more than 75% (not to mention off air audio).

I would personally put Counterstrike as one of my all time favourite shows. And I am sorry that only 4 episodes of it survive. When I first contacted the archives I was told that all 10 episodes survived - so I am not sure where the other 6 were lost.
Other shows I am particularly sad that are missing are -
The missing Adam Adamant Lives episodes The 5 missing Adventures of Don Quick The missing episodes of Sanctuary The missing episodes of Callan The Missing episodes of Public Eye The River Flows East (6 part serial) Paradise Walk (4 part serial) The missing episodes of Mystery and Imagination The Master (6 part series) The missing episodes of Freewheelers The missing episodes of Badger's Bend The missing episodes of Orlando (all but 2 are missing) The missing episodes of 60s David Copperfield. The missing episodes of 60s Jane Eyre The missing episodes of John Carson's Dombey and Son The Old Curiosity Shop (starring Patrick Troughton) The Woodlanders (classic serial with Annette Robertson) The missing episode of Nana (1960s series) The missing episodes of Twizzle Francie and Josie (STV comedy series) The missing episodes of The Army Game The missing episodes of Francis Durbridge Presents...... The missing episodes of All Gas and Gaiters and Oh Brother The missing episodes of Not In Front of the Children The missing Harry Worth BBC episodes The missing Object Z episodes The missing Ace of Wands episodes
I am sad that all these shows no longer exist.

Just goes to show there would be an interest for all sorts of shows, regardless of your definition of 'cult'!
Someone mentioned Rediffusion stuff and some more of their drama and other output back in the archives would be a good thing (e.g. Rat Catchers, The Informer, Crane, Ready Steady Go). The same applies to ABC series (e.g. Intrigue, Mystery & Imagination, Armchair Theatre, Thank Your Lucky Stars). With Rediffusion though, there is no "natural home" for those shows now as the company no longer exists and the BFI only show interest in archiving certain items if they come to light! With ABC, there is total apathy towards what DOES exist with Canal+ and so why would anyone wish to offer them more missing material to put back in an archival black hole to rot away with the rest of the stuff?!
The perceived higher interest in BBC series might also be to do with the fact that they have a higher profile archive all under one roof and have made more visible attempts to recover material (although not enough, it has to be said). ITV stuff is scattered across many rights holders all of who have varying degrees of interest in recovering their programmes.

Plenty of Badger's Bend in a private 16mm collection, they should be listed in Lost Shows.
