I second almost everything said on this thread.
I miss the (its hard to describe perhaps) the cheery,optimism that Crossroads had and salute the way it was able to deliver week on week a gripping storyline. I think history now has proved that Noele Gordon was the matriarch that held it all together and when Lew Grade lost control of ATV it became her downfall as well.
These days a soap like Emmerdale is just people shouting and hopping into bed with each other, all the plots are confrontational, miserable and the rare humour is so staged & wooden that scriptwriters must believe it came from another planet?
With the DVD release I like episode 3000 of Crossroads now, because its clear from the countdown clock they have all had a bit of a 'celebration' and those opening scenes take on a new meaning, and would like to bet that is real beer in those glasses, as they try not slurr their lines LOL
