I have read that not long before she died Thora Hird was surprised by the red book, and her reaction was she said she'd already been done before. I haven't seen it though, the only UK TIYL I know of that has screened here was Douglas Bader's, as a tribute to him by TVNZ when he died. I have seen other earlier ones on tape, but we sdly never get to see the UK ones on TYV here. We have had our own version of course which is very intimitant and usually only done on sports stars - the NZ ones are odd in that they actualy do go out live, and a couple have run over their scheduled hour. I recall the All Black Michael Jones's one was so interesting to participants it went for nearly two hours, which the broadcaster TVNZ allowed quite happily. Just like the UK ones, we never see them repeated or released on DVD either. They do all exist in an archive though I believe.

Does no-one have any opinion or answer to me query earlier of;
"This Is Your Life used to often show clips from shows when they had actors as the subject. Have any surviving TIYL shows from the 1960's and 1970's inadvertantly saved clips of shows where the original show the clip came from has been wiped?"

I suppose that depends on what has survived Dave - as far as I can gather (though please prove me wrong somebody!). only a selection survive from both decades - though i imagine in some cases clips from some shows could have made it through onto flashbacks, what would be interesting is to see breakdowns of what was featured on these shows, clips, guests, etc...

Only a certain amount of the BBC editions survive. As far as the ITV version is concerned, the programmes between the beginning in 1969 and about 1974 are patchy in the archives (a lot survive but quite a few do not). The series is complete from around 1975 onwards.

If you go to www.lostshows.com you'll get a complete list of all missing shows. I'm surprised that the moderators don't stick the link on this site somewhere permanently because looking stuff up on our site can often answer many queries. It doesn't list all missing stuff, some genres are not very well represented, and it does have the odd error (which we correct quickly when found), but we set it up to act as a place to answer old queries, and yet it doesn't get used that much. c

Thanks Laurence and Chris
There are still quite a lot missing by that list, (I'll add lost shows to my favourites).
Do any audio recordings survive of any of the missing shows? I read somewhere that apparently subjects would get presented with a copy of the book and a soundtrack of the show years ago (obviously before the video age) - pity they didnt present the subject with the film seeing that some ended up been destroyed anyway!
I know a small section of Clive Dunn's This is your Life (1971) survives on audio - i wonder if anyone else recorded it or indeed other shows?

i guess its not an easy task but someone should try contacting the star (if they are still with us!) of each program to see if they still have the recording they were given of the show at the time. i imagine most people kept the recording as it was such a personal momento

Did anyone record the TIYL special in 2001 ? I think I did but my videos are all over the place. I do remember watching it and all I can remember are a couple of archive clips... one of Eamonn at Old Trafford to surprise some old guy on match day who seemed to think it was a joke and refused to acknowledge the red book. I also recall a b+w clip of Charlie Drake's Mum who looked alarmingly like him!

I'm wondering if Spike was featured more than once too, maybe before or after the show was on ITV? Spike was the subject twice, once in 1973 and again shortly after his "little grovelling bastard" award appearance (1998?). I suspect he was supposed to have been surprised at that ceremony but they postponed a few weeks. There was certainly someone who could well have been Michael Aspel in a huge fake beard in the audience that night. Harry Secombe was also done twice. Once in 1958 on the Beeb and again by Thames in 1990. I think John Mills and Arthur Askey had similar doubles. It wouldn't surprise me if Spike had been done in the 1950s too, but without having a full list of BBC subjects it's hard to say.

It would be great if someone could try to get the rights to repeat all the surviving TIYLs but I guess getting clearances on the clips featured would be tricky.
