Just a random thought I had..............
I was wondering if people would be interested in a feature on a future DVD release about the nice old chap who made an off air recording of Space Pirates episode 2 in the 60s. I for one would be fascinated to actually hear the guy's story from his own lips and maybe even see a sample of the sort of picture quality that was left on the tapes.
Like I said, its just a thought, but it might make for an interesting extra, and also it might raise awareness about the possibilities for recoveries.

I too would think this to be a good idea, as would be curious to see the actual picture quality on the recovered tape. As well as the mentioned machines, and equipment, tapes, etc he had about.Possibly like the reconstruction of The Lion or Tomb Of The Cybermen segments on the DVD releases? Just a thought there.
Would be a good idea as to assist in the awareness of missing TV material in general, as this chap also had full episodes of Moonbase 3 which would of been a big find if had not been for the NTSC recordings discovered previously. Also mentioned the earliest domestic colour recording of an episode of Doctor Who, Frontier In Space ep 5 I believe, would think all this material would make for an interesting segment, as would like to see said examples of the discovered material.
Cheers, Lance.

I was just thinking about what was the earliest surviving off air video recording of Doctor Who and came across this thread. Does anyone know what format this was on ? Sony CV2000 ? Philips EL3400 ? or something else ?

That's what the tape was, but I think Keith is wondering what format VTR was used, and therefore, what format the signal is.

Wasn't it a Sony CV2000 (or a similar model)? It would have looked a bit like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oxo2PawIHT4As you can see, transfer is difficult so this example was recorded from a TV screen!

It is possible to transfer CV2000 material electronically, but I've only managed to do it once successfully. I still have the original 'Space Pirates' #2 recording which was made by Bob Wallis. He was an old guy in 1998 and that was 17 years ago. I will though dig out the footage we shot that day and perhaps put up a little film. It's a shame that the camera copy of the Benny Hill was done from a very poor monitor; it can look much better with the right equipment. Paul

I shouldn't look down on what was already a difficult thing to resuscitate, but I kept feeling that that Benny Hill, and also a Tommy Cooper show, might have been worth a better shot. There was more material that was all incomplete, but these were two complete and well-known programs.

It's unfortunate he didn't have a playable evil of the Daleks.

It's unfortunate he didn't have a playable evil of the Daleks. We found a reel marked 'Doctor Who' with the dates for some of the repeats of 'Evil' and another for the missing eps of 'The Invasion'. However, he had respooled these reels with better quality tape after those recordings were made. Long gone. Paul

If you're curious to know what off air recordings on a CV2000 look like, take a look at this (click here). It's on my Facebook page, but hopefully the link should work and the clips should be viewable. This is from a selection of off-air programmes from 1965-69. And to pre-empt the obvious question, sadly there isn't, no. !!

The picture and sound quality seem not at all bad and if Power, Evil, Snowmen, etc turned up like this I'd be more than happy to drool... I mean savour it. You never know, perhaps someone out there has this kind of copy and not being a Dr Who nut has little concept of our rather desperate situation. I don't suppose some amateur Brit has already been to Pluto, planted missing episodes and is waiting for NASA to find them a la First Men in the Moon.. No I suppose not.

Yes if those were clips from any missing episode we would be jumping for joy and not at all complaining about the video off locks and picture drop outs. . . .
