I was thinking...as everybody knows there is people out there with missing matireal, but to afraid to come forward because of leagle issues...supposing an appeal went out for the return of these programes, with the promise of no action taken?....just a thought....

put it this way, if you left your camcorder ( with your baby's precious recordings on), on the back seat of a bus. Suddenly 20 years later your tape is recovered, would you be really bothered where it came from, you would just want to see the tape surely?

Well...if theres no leagle issue, then either people are too scared, or the old story...£££££ ? Try this: either a) They don't have anything - this stuff does not grow on trees. b) they do have stuff but don't realize that anyone is looking for it and of course there *is* plenty of stuff that has been turned in and is now back in the archives.

Sometimes the archives cherry pick. It may be a revelation to some of the people on this site, but 'they' don't want everything back. I know that about ten years ago (for example) the BBC refused an absolute gem (with no reason).

money£££££££££ recovery costs money, storage costs money, restoration costs money, better to look the other way, no find no expense, once you've signed for it you are 100% responsible for it both legaly and financialy, if the archive isn't interested its easy to turn it down, but a right bugger to get rid of (technically known as ethical disposal) once you have it ,think chewing gum in the hair unfortunatly what interest us may not be of interest to the archive, they aren't nescesseraly TV fans like us when your job is to look after film and video cans, they become items to be stored not programs to be watched.

William...some good points there...so at the end of the day, if its a case of..£££££,it sounds like the employees dont give a hoot what they have got, or of historical value, as log as its in a can....all a waste of time?

Lester -- I can't answer for any one else, but the BBC has been great about dealing with the missing films and other prints that I've lent them for transfer. No problems - they made copies and sent the originals right back... Not sure how other companies act...

Replying to Andy above - ten years ago is a long time, the people running the archive are different now. Without knowing the details it's impossible to be definitive, but I worry that people are going to be put off offering to lend the BBC copies of material they hold if things that happened that long ago are still held out as being typical of what would happen now. Of course, that's not to say the BBC would go to any lengths to get back a copy of any show - which is why they don't pay for return of material - but if a 'gem' was offered in good faith now it certainly wouldn't be refused for no reason. I just wonder why it apparently happened then - I have a feeling there must be more to this than you imply, though as I say, I don't have all the facts.

It was straighforward. An offer of a missing BBC Comedy programme. No reply. In my case, I have had very good material shunned, though not from the BBC.
