I don't believe anything has been seen publicly; there is a US collector who claims to have Paperback Writer/Rain; also Fenno Werkman claims to have it too. Most importantly Apple were on record as saying that they had a copy, but that it was really poor quality, and the reason that they chose not to include this on the Anthology was PURELY to do with this.

[/quote That's interesting. Never heard that Apple had it (or indeed Werkman - in what quality, I wonder? Wonder if the BBC know?) I remember McCartney remarking in an interview at the time of Anthology that they (Apple) had viewed and short-listed TOTP material for inclusion in the series but decided against it in the end as quality was poor. He didn't say which TOTP appearance though.

Laurence; I refer you to the post made by Peter Chadwick on the forum on October 13th, 2003.He states that the producers were 'offered' a copy of it, but it was unbroadcastable. I'll check out the Werkman thing so I can give you any sort of source.

It would be interesting to see what could be done with the clip to improve its quality, the anthology program came out in 1995 and computer technology has moved on a hell of a lot since then. personally id love to see it in any condition as anything unseen by the beatles makes a change from the familiar clips that always get repeated

Agreed. At least this proves the performance exists (and probably the whole edition of TOTP) out there somewhere, which was generally acknowledged as being the case anyway. It's an important piece of missing TV; I wish the BBC would take the matter on board...

The BBC gave each Beatle an early version of the home video recorder to test out so it is quite possible that one or more of the Beatles recorded their Top of The Pops appearence. From reading Bill Wyman's biography the Beatles were impressed with his memoribillia collection and he encouraged them to keep an archive. Unfortunatly Ringo lost a lot a material in house fire.

If I recall corrently Paul McCartney had recorded Jimi Hendrix's performance on " Happening For Lulu" in 1969. That later McCartney had recorded over his TV performances sadly.
Never heard though what John Lennon and George Harrison did with their machines, and video reels ? Have not heard any info on these machines, and their subsequent recordings ? curious.
Also heard that Marc Bolan had a Reel to Reel video machine, but that later the tapes were thrown out of his house by parents at some point. Makes me wonder of any of these were saved from the skip ? May never know there.
There is also the small bit of the Beatles on Top Of The Pops that was used in the first episode of the Doctor Who story The Chase. Know that this is all from that particular performance to survive, they are performing "Ticket To Ride", glad this material survived.
Hope some of these collectors may some day decide to loan their material for others to see. As Feno had been reported to bring, and allow screening of some of his rare material, am hoping he may be more open to talks at accessing his material.
Cheers, Lance.

I doubt that any of the Beatles Video tapes survived. 1. We would have seen em on the Anthology 2. There would have been some Hoopla if anything was found after. 3. It would have been bloody obvious that it was Home VT
now the only 2 clips in the anth that DO come from Home 60's vid are We can work it out + Day Tripper. It sticks out a mile and for the last 8 years Ive sometimes wondered why no one has ever mentioned it before..
I once heard that Ringo was concidered to the beats "archivist" and from bits and pieces ive read.
He had a MASSIVE film and video tape library, he had virtually every VT/TR that the beatles had done/ Had a massive memorabilia collection too. He was well aware of the importance that the TV spots would have in the future. Knew they could be considered his "retirement". and had em very very carefully looked after (and if any damage was seen on any film print he'd have a Film copy made and still keep the original film (in a deep freeze apparently) clever man. he had been given most of the other Beatles's film and video's as well as 10000's feet of home movies. The Lot was destroyed in 1979 (was it 79?) . The ONLY yep the ONLY reason that Apple still had enough material to make the Anthogy was that in 70 a film "the Long And Winding Road" was in Preproduction and was finished but never screened this doco held most of the material used in the anthology. and of course private archives and TV stations arpund the world helped fill it out a bit..

The Day Tripper / We Can Work It Out clips used in Anthology weren't home recordings. They were substandard dubs that were used, for some reason - possibly U-Matics (better copies are available on bootlegs). They were also letterboxed, presumably to hide a bit of dropout at the top of the screen that is noticeable on the unofficial versions. There were quite a few restoration issues with Anthology and it seems many short cuts were taken. A proper clean-up of all The Beatles archive video material is long overdue. I wish the Doctor Who restoration team could be given the task as no one would do it better!
I don't think The Long & Winding Road was ever finished, although it got to a pretty developed point before being discarded. Some of the archive material was made by NEMS / Apple at the time anyway and so always resided with them, along with items they asked for prints of at the time (e.g. Around The Beatles).

Why don't they contact Bill Wyman (although Apple probably have?). I once heard a story that (fairly recently) he had McCartney over for dinner, they got talking about their old TV appearances. When Wyman showed McCartney how much he had of THE BEATLES, McCartney's comment was 'Bloody hell, Bill. You've got more stuff of us than WE have!'.

I recall a 'Record Collector' feature interviewing the production team of Anthology. The team said they collated all the footage available from sources worldwide, and states that they "recieved an edition of 'Top of the Pops' which was of poor quality and not used".
It doesn't say which edition they looked at, however it's the 'Paperback Writer/Rain' edition which as we know, they only appeared in person and we hope they have! If someone still has the edition of RC (think it was Nov/Dec 1995 when Anthology was released) a possible inroad could be made with the person who was interviewed? Jon

It's a common myth that The Beatles only appeared on TOTP once (and with Mark Lewisohn's books listing their TV appearances in detail, i'm not sure why this continues)! They appeared several times in the TOTP studio to promote their singles but the 16/6/66 performance was the only one that was not pre-recorded earlier. They also appeared on the show in '64 more than once and in '65 (a small clip of the Ticket To Ride performance is all that survives though, as featured in a Doctor Who edition). So it's not conclusive that it was the '66 TOTP that was considered for use in Anthology, although it's likely the one as - so far anyway - none of the others are known to survive in any quality.
