Hi Peter,
It's again been a while since I stopped by, have there been any more clues or leads in the hunt fopr a copy of this film?
Best Regards,

Don't know where you are with it Gary? but an abridged version was found in Hong Kong in the estate of the director a while back I think.
Forum member Peter Prentice was/is the man on the case.

Present tense, Peter. Just about. And just to avoid any confusion, the abridged (or emasculated) version known as "Musicorama-Popdown" was found at Contemporary Films in London. A quantity of other 16mm and 35mm negative reels were found in Hong Kong. Will work on an update in coming days. Busy became hectic as of about eight o'clock last night, thanks to a potential development concerning the participation of a hitherto uncredited musical act.

No need to apologise, Peter. There are so many strands to my enquiries that even I have to take refresher courses.
Can now confirm a hitherto uncredited musical act DO appear in the film. All will be revealed shortly.

So a "hitherto uncredited act" does appear in the movie but no Idle Race I'd say Peter..? Bah humbug..... The Idle Race almost certainly featured in the original full length ('erotic') version screened in Rio de Janeiro. And more than likely the Scala version as well, if only fleetingly. Which puts a question mark against their reported pulling out of the film in August 1968. Would Fred Marshall have taken a blind bit of notice if they did want to pull out? Nope.

I'm surprised no Idle Race footage has surfaced amongst the treasure trove of European stuff that's come to light recently. As I said on this forum many years back, they were about as high profile a 1960s band could be without having any chart success whatsoever. (In the Jeff Lynne incarnation anyway) They must have made more than a few tv appearances I would've thought. Less interesting speculation, but I'd say it's likely that they would have made some kind of promo films for their versions of "Neathanderthal Man" and "In the Summertime" later on.

Unfortunately no editions of Discotheque appear to exist. Such a tragedy.

That was me under an earlier username! Unfortunately I haven't found out any more details in the intervening 6 and a half years. I would bet money that The Idle Race did a fair amount of tv tho. Maybe some ELO archvists have access to the band's itineries?
