Have read a lot of info on here and other places of what was sold to whom & when in the 60s and 70s...was wondering if anyone's investigated the Gibraltar archives lately. It's still a part (though the Spanish would probably disagree) of the realm and I would guess fairly straightforward to get a reply from, and a lot easier to deal with as a potential source for missing material than lot of other far-flung countries that have been blighted by war etc.
Any feedback much appreciated.

Yes, Gibralter has been thoroughly investigated, but they've not had any Doctor Who for many, many years.

Thanks Richard....any idea how long ago this was? You say thoroughly investigated but how recently and by who...

Well I had some extensive communications with their archive around five years ago, and I believe they've been double-checked since then.
All the Doctor Who film prints they received were bicycled onto other countries once they had finished with them.

Hi Richard,
Based on the extensive information you've accrued over the years, what's your personal take on the missing episode situation generally? Do you believe there could be holdings in any one country in particular (putting aside the fact we may never actually prove it, because of the practicality or otherwise of it all)?

Bicycled whither - most of the Troughtons presumably went to either Nigeria or Zambia, based on the purchase dates?

Cool, so my Zambia inquiery could have a chance of uncovering some missing episodes. Or are people going to state that the episodes were sent back to NZ to be destroyed as the BBC wished at the time ? But look at the fate of the Lion, it was on its way to be destroyed, and was saved. Could others have survived the purge in Zambia ?

What would they do with them? Zambia is a poor country so it's highly unlikely that someone would privately own the equipment to screen 16mm film. So thinking back to the 1960s70s, DW was a disposable commodity - with emphasis on the word disposable. Jon Preddle

Surely Lance is referring to them being saved when they were received in N.Z like The Lion was.

Sorry to be a curmudgeon but how did the subject of this thread switch continents suddenly from Gibraltar to Zambia? Could someone be more specific as where the Gibraltar (that's GIBRALTAR not Zambia!) prints got bicycled to?

Could someone be more specific as where the Gibraltar (that's GIBRALTAR not Zambia!) prints got bicycled to? The confusing thing is that the NZBC records (which I had another look at last weekend) show that a number of programmes sent overseas did come back to NZ. As I've mentioned elsewhere in this forum, NZBC was also a bond store for the BBC, that supplied "loan" films. Some of the countries that did return BBC material to NZ were Zambia, Singapore and Malta. (Note: Doctor Who is *not* one of these programmes.) The NZBC records as far as I'm concerned are very accurate. Jon Preddle

Oops, my last post should have "quoted" Tim's and not Nick's posting...
