There's a mention of a new rumour over at Outpost Gallifrey that an Ice Warriors episode has been found. Can anyone put any meat on the bone? Or is this just same old, same old.

Do try reading the thread on OG!!! It very clearly states - "How do these rumours get started anyway? Perhaps we should start one here and see how far it can go. Missing Ice Warriors episodes found, anyone?" I guess you've just proved the point... Richard

didn't a bbc copy of one of the missing episodes go walkies before it was destroyed? Nope! No episodes of The Ice Warriors were on 35mm. They were all VT recordings. Richard

The BBC film library did keep a 16mm print of 'The Ice Warriors' episode 3, but this was one of six episodes that they did keep at one point, but they had disposed of or the prints went missing prior to 1978. The others were: 'Crusade' 1 on 16mm, 'Toymaker' 2, 'Power' 6, and 'Wheel' 5 on 35mm (all junked before 1972), and 'Masterplan' 4 on 16mm (never returned from 'Blue Peter').

Richard

Only 'Masterplan' 4 went missing. The rest were junked.
Why do people state that things which they know nothing about are 'more likely possible'?

Richard

No!
Blue Peter borrowed the film print of DMP 4 from the Film Library and it was never returned. There are memos in existence from the Film Library to the Blue Peter office requesting the return of the print.
Blue Peter probably never had a complete print of TP4 - the extract they used was more than likely copied from a BBC Enterprises print at a central telecine point. Thus if they never had it, they could not have lost it.
The Film Library never had a copy of TP4.

It was never proved BP lost TP4 - but it was never proved they had it either!!! But 'MAsterplan' 4 is another story. Regards, Richard

Maybe someone from the BBC Archives could be granted access to the former blue peter home, or could research some of the employees names and see if one might have borrowed a episode or two from the studio? Hey, it happened before DMP2, the same could be true here!

>went missing is the more likely possible to me. Some of them could be out there seems.< Only 'Masterplan' 4 went missing. The rest were junked. Why do people state that things which they know nothing about are 'more likely possible'? Regards, Richard I think the term 'more likely possible' is perhaps unrealistic. As regards 16mm prints, the documentation (record cards) is the official statement. There though, room for a possibility of removal from the office at which they were stored has been proven feasible through past finds. The most debateable aspect as I see it, is what happened to those 35mm film prints that were transmitted as such. The reason I raise this is that the BBC and other companies recycled tape as an economy due to the expense of tape. Thus, by calculating a possible 10 re-wipings, the potential repurchase cost of 200 pounds could be reduced and economised. When 16mm sales prints were struck, these paid for themselves by the sales to other broadcasters. With 35mm it was very expensive. The cost of the film could not be reimbursed by recycling or, when a transmission (rather than sales copy) by sales. Largely, 35mm stock seems to have been retained for that reason. I would argue that the possiblility that the two missing 35mm tx prints ('Power 6' and 'Wheel 5') were removed rather than junked remains a reasonable allegation.
