On a positive angle though it would be nice to see this story with its returned New Zealand censorship clips What NZ censor clips? "The Dominators" wasn't purchased by a NZ broadcaster (Prime TV) until 2000. Unless the Beeb has lost them since - tut, tut, tut...

He's referring to the Australian censor clips rather than the New Zealand ones.

Perhaps I judge DOMINATORS on feelings from the time. Todays audience may want to bear in mind Haisman / Lincoln sold the rights to 'TV COMIC' in advance of the BBC 'Quarks' appearance. Entirely the opposite is true! BBC Enterprises allowed TV Comic to use the Quarks in the Doctor Who strip, which appeared around the same time The Dominators was being broadcast. Haisman and Lincoln were incensed that their creation has been used without their permission, which led to a lot of legal wrangling between the two parties and the writers declaring that they wouldn't work on the programme again. Richard Are I always thought it was due to the scripts been cut down so it end up been five episodes with the ‘Norman Ashby’ name used. Not due to other rights issues like this! Thanks for raising my awareness hear Richard

Richard Thanks for amending some of the errors in my comments. I'm sure though that the first 'Quarks' strips appeared when I was in the Infants at school. I have a memory of being allowed to stay in due to wet weather; and we were given boxes of toys and comics to occupy us. The member of staff entrusted to do this was a Mrs Rayworth; who I know to have been an Infants school teacher. I can see in my minds eye myself picking 'TV comic' issues for the Dr Who strip. One of the stories involved the Cybermen and another the Quarks versus I think the Artists invention; a race called 'The Trods'. In this the Quarks were an independent race who arrived in their own flying saucer; doing the bossing about and giving the orders. Of course the on screen version is the definitive version but I recall this disappointment that the Quarks weren't the boss; the humanoid Dominators were. That would date the memory at latest a around July 1968; six weeks or so before 'THE DOMINATORS' was screened. Not my favourite Troughton by any means;but its a cleverly written story.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next Troughton story is "The Dominators" if the extras on 'Black Orchid' and 'Time Meddler' are any example. Both have featurettes on Doctor Who comics and as someone pointed out, the Quarks were used in the Troughton comics. It would be a logical tie-in.

Well theres only 3 complete Troughton's to release now. Personally I'd be happy to see any of them get an official release, Okay they maybe arent the best representations of his era, but niether is The Macra Terror (and if that did end up being recovered I'm sure we'd all still want to see that!) - note how many fans breaking into a cold sweat in recent weeks with the possibility of its existence. Of course The War Games is going to be a big release, (I'm hoping 2 Discs with lots of extras), well you can dream can't you!

I hold this up as an example of classic 60s sci fi! Ok, I know im in the minority in general, but the krotons is a great story! I have literaly no idea why people dont rate it so highly. Its not web of fear, but its still a cracker, and much better paced than the war games imo!

Richard can probably confirm for sure, but my understanding is that there was a series of disputes around the Dominators, beginning with the story being rewritten, and an episode cut, without telling Haisman and Lincoln hence the "Norman Ashby" pseudonym. Matters deteriorated further after the recording but before transmission when the BBC tried to merchandise the Quarks (succeeding in getting them into TV Comic) without the authors' consent.
