Good on you mate, you stick with it Ethan. The series is a lot better than the movie.
Usually movie versions of TV comedy series don't work as the nature of feature-length screenplays differ in the way any form of drama (the foundation of any comedic situation) is presented to an audience. In a half-hour programme the turning points and through-lines are structured much tighter to enable the audience to see the comedy building, reach its climax then follow on quickly to the next point. This helps to avoid over-analysis of the script.
A feature-length allows an audience much more time to reflect on what has happened and analyse the situation - this does not always work with the kind of comedy that David Croft and Jimmy Perry present.
Believe me, the comedy in "Dad's Army" works much better in the half-hour format.
Also bear in mind that both Croft and Perry lived through the war years themselves and as such have a good understanding of how the audiences of the day approached situational comedy as realistic occurances (much of the "Dad's Army" escapades are based on real events).
I find that often the best way to appreciate something like this is to put myself in the mindset of the original audience - the level of expectation of today's audiences are not always served by older material.
Anyway - I'm sure you will enjoy Series 1 & 2 (or what remains of it). Go hard, man.

Does the "music video" bit date from the show's era, or was it made specifically as a DVD extra? Interesting that they ultimately stuck with the 3rd mmode out of 4 for the colour end credits too.

Good on you mate, you stick with it Ethan. The series is a lot better than the movie. I've just watched Absent Friends (4.06) and enjoyed it much more than the film. The characters are much better developed and a lot more interesting in the series. I didn't find the episode laugh-out-loud funny, but it did raise a few smiles. I'll definitely be buying the DVDs when I can afford to and I'll be watching Put That Light Out (4.07) later too. "We could take away their privileges." "We haven't got any privileges." "Well, we could give them some privileges and then take them away."That was funny! ;D

I heard there were telesnaps for the missing episodes. It wouldn't have killed them to include a couple.

This is hardly surprising, as John Cura who ran the tele-snaps service had been dead for several months by the time they were broadcast.

I think actually he died around the time of the transmission (March/April 69) - either way the point is valid!
