I'd be happy to, if the gentleman who made the original posting on this page is ok with it. I don't want to tread on his toes, and since he made the discovery... That's decent of you mate, thanks I've saved you the bother- actually it will be interesting to see if you have exactly the same thing as me, or if yours is better quality. Apparently the title 'The Ascent of Everest' was given for parts 2 and 3 of this episode. Given the lack of opening title music maybe this is the episode from after Max Geldray's bit, with Ellington's playing edited out.
Whatever it is it's damn good.
Thanks a lot.

By the way. Does the St Davids Day special 'Goons Hit Wales' exist?

I've just read the front page of the forum, and spotted the "no handles please" rule. I've been coming to this page for months, and that one passed me by completely.
my apologies - sin of omission, rather than deliberate. No more difbrook on this forum... as Mike Yarwood used to say, "and this is me".

OK this show (ascent) has been available for at least 5 years that I know of.. its on every 2nd goon FTP type thing for at least the same time.. same with hasting's flyer. As far as i know the beeb won't want mp3 type recordings (most ive heard are pretty dire) the problem is to get to the original source or the 1st or 2nd gen tape if you like. when this is located a nice cleaner version could be possible but not from this crappy mp3.. ok ok i hear you say.. a bit of NR could do wonders for this show.. ok .. but ttry the same restoration tecqunies on lower gen tape/disc you would not beleive your ears.. I know.. I do it for a living.. any news on the 10 or so 4th series show's that Ted Kendall has that we/beeb has not?,.. last I heard he was holding out for the goon box set's then he may use them as "extras" as the goon boxes may never be relesed (emi owning copying on sevral shows etc) have they slipped out yet..

Good- I'm glad an answer has been found to my query. I merely wondered if anyone else was aware of the existance of these. I don't think anyone was suggesting any restoration of an mp3. I would totally agree with you about going back to the earliest generation recording available (an ethos which is the mainstay of every RT Who DVD release). It was merely amazement on my part that the recording, however 'nutsty', existed at all. If you look back at my original post, you will see that I described the recordings as 'not fantastic quality'. Now we need to discover their origin.

Now we need to discover their origin. Or at least find one of a decent bitrate. I do wish the people who distribute old radio shows on the net wouldnt use such a nasty low bitrate.

sorry Wooders I hear about this show every few months or so..
and sorry that i didn't really look closely at your orig post !!..
Im restoring lots of OTR at the moment (getting my 16 inch Transcription TT a workout) and sometimes i have to go back to mp3's of various shows to play em side by side to check for cuts and when you hear an mp3 play side by side with a TS disc It'll blow you away..
anyway Im transfering loads of BBC TS discs , just for that reason,., so we can have Higher Bitrate Mp3's !!!

I confess I'd lost my interest in goons for a while, having heards all my tapes too many times, but this recording, however distorted has had me in stitches again. It would be fantastic to hear this in true beautiful sound quality, however, I fear the original source to be an open reel tape, having decayed throughout the years this will have such a narrow band of frequancies that it will never be of a suitable quality for public listening. I have tired to restore some recordings I own on open reel tape, but I have only managed a second rate transfer. To find the tape source though, would be a start, and I believe there are ways of returning the missing frequancies via computer. Oh, it would be nice to hear it properly, its one of the best i've heard.
