Adrian, you are quite right some 4th series shows exist, but the messages elsewhere were far from cryptic. I was lucky enough to come across a reference to some off air discs a few years ago on a Dr Who board and chased it up resulting in several shows being discovered. Safety copies were made instantly, withthe contents verified, and an initial restoration performed, and the material was offered to the BBC - both archives, and pitched as a basis for a series of repeats. THERE HAS BEEN NO INTEREST. I continue to try to get the BBC interested, but it seems that they have enough Goon Shows already!
As for Spike, he did have a couple of early shows recorded on paper tape, but these have been in circulation for years. As far as I know he didn't have any more, and Norman Farnes didn't seem at all interested in the 4th series discoveries either - I don't know whether the information was ever passed to Spike.

paper tape? how did that work
and I was once told by an aquaitance, a reputable source, that he had tried to buy some Transcription discs but couldn't match a rival offer this was a few years ago now but from what he could remember they were from a man whos father had worked in forces radio and had found the discs from the 50s dumped in a store room in the mid 60s

'from what he could remember they were from a man whos father had worked in forces radio and had found the discs from the 50s dumped in a store room in the mid 60s ' . I worked at the BBC Transcription Service from 1976 to 1983. I am not surprised at this story at all. After all, our contracts with overseas radio stations was two years or one transmission and two repeats. After that, the radio stations were in no way bound to return the discs to us, some did, we then just returned the discs to Decca or EMI for melting down and re-use, or the discs were simply not returned. It didn't matter to us if they were not as they were out of contract anyway. By the way, we couldn't re-use the returned discs again in case they had been scratched or damaged (we still had master tapes to run further quarter inch copies from), so we binned 'em!

interesting, its good to have the story corroborated although I was fairly certain that this sort of thing happens
I think in all the excitement over lost tv and the like, radio tends to get overlooked, it may not be as flashy as tv but I think its just a interesting, there are fewer radio episode hunters than tv episode hunters which is a shame because potentialy radio is an easier format to recover.

I would have to check, but I don't think TS took the Goon Show until the 5th series, hence 5 onwards are nearly all around. The ore 5th series discs that the GSPS are currently holding are home made ones. Disc cutting was one of the few ways to record in those days, with tape being hugely expensive. As for paper tape, I assume that instead of the plastic tape with the ferrous material on, it was paper with the ferrous. I would hate to spill coffee over it though!

I see, that makes more sense, I was thinking of punched tape yes that would work, tough paper waxed on one side iron oxide on the other, bet it burns well though.

its a bit of a pity TS diddnt take any eliers series
and most of the TS disks sometimes turn up on ebay but with the new Ted Kendal Restord verions these are pretty defunt
so what were the shows from the 4th series discoverd
if the beeb wernt interested you can bet your plong that Ted Kenall would be (the Goon resoratior wizard)
Have you copies of these shows youd be willing to copy for interested people?

The discs are with Ted Kendall, and no I do not have copies at present. This was my decision as I would have been too tempted to dish them out, and we are still hoping that they can be used to lever a boxed edition of the Goons out of the BBC at some time.

These discs are actually owned by my Father. I hope we will get them returned in the not too distant future.
Of the missing episodes - one is called "Prane - aka Western Story". I'm not a Goons fan, but I think there are about half a dozen missing ones in the batch that were lent to Steve Arnold.

Duncan, we are still whittling away at the Beeb, and boxed sets are being considered at present, so FINGERS CROSSED, the missing shows will get released. There is still a way to go (as the bean counters have to make sure that they will still make a profit) but it seems the most hopeful situation to date. The discs are still with Ted for safe keeping and in readiness of restoration, and will be returned as soon as this is done.

I say, Steve, for those of us who've lost track, would you be able to post a list of which 4th series Goons Shows are now known to exist?
