Tom Browne! I'd forgotten all about him! I just noticed this thread. I also have some recordings of the chart show with Tom from about 1972-4, taped from the radio on cassette. Not sure how many are complete though. There's also the recording of the first 90 mins of Radio 1 from 1967. This is also interesting as it includes a news bulletin too. This one I would think is in fairly wide circulation though.

Steve, your message was posted a long time ago but I would certainly be interested in Alan Freemans last two POTPs from September 72. I collect his shows and know one or two people that do the same. I guess if all of us who recorded shows all got together, and pooled our tapes and recordings we may have every show between us ? I am also interested in the early (72/3) Solid Gold 60 shows. For more info on Tom Browne see wiki encyclopedia which I have updated to correct some info and add some info too about his shows.

Peter - as the Wiki post mentions, there are lots of the Top 20 shows available (I have a selection in my archive, although not as many as some) & Alan Freeman's last POTP from 24 Sep 72 is widely in circulation (although I was not aware of the previous one until now). I am far too young to recall, but I have been told the reason people didn't really record the first 2 hours of Solid Gold 60 because it only went out on medium wave and reception was very bad in many areas of the country (I've also discovered these two hours were discontinued in March 1974).
Tom's Abba special he did for Radio 1 in 1976 also survives as well, but those 72 and 73 year-end shows are really interesting, because I am sure the sound quality is far superior than the ones I've heard.

I've just found a couple of Tom Browne's "Solid Gold Sixty" shows on tape. They're circa 27.1.73. and 17.2.73, and assuming that they're the Top 20 version of the show they're only missing a minutes or so at the start. These are fun to listen to, the links are amusing but not too obtrusive, and plenty of these UK hits never got airplay in Australia. There's also a Tom Browne "Pick Of The Pops"" end-of-year run down for 1971. I still have a few tapes to listen through, I'll post if there's any more UK off-airs there.

I've got a Tom Browne POTP from 1977. It's a lead recording off FM on to 2 track reel to reel. The quality is excellent however as I only have a 4 track machine at the moment it picks up imperfections in the recording including in places an annoying regular reduction in sound level every 20 or so seconds, so I really need to get hold of a 2 track machine in order to get the best possible digital copy.

OK, assuming the 1973 shows were all on Sundays, the songs that were new chart entries date my recordings to 28.1.73. and 18.2.73. Apart from the 1971 end-of-year, I've found nothing else of interest in this batch of tapes.

I have a few shows from 1973 & 1974, there are so few Solid Gold of the first part of the show, most are the last 60 minutes, i will list the 1975 shows Below. There are also a few [badly] reconstructed shows where the whole record is placed between Toms vocals, not where he cut the record so the 60 minute shows are over 70 minutes long. I could do a much better job on reconstructing them as could many others on here. One missing show from 1976 is the one where "No6" Jingle is played during Elton Johns Pinball Wizard after its "No7" at the start, and a "Ha Ha" from Tom, i had the tape once, its usefull because it shows the delay Between the Number Jingles if they dont exist as later they changed to a new set of Jam Jingles. 12.1.75, 2.2.75, 2.3,75, 9.3.75, 30.3.75, 6.4.75, 13.4.75, 20.4.75, 27.4.75, 4.5.75, 11.5.75, 18.5.75, 25.5.75, 1.6.75, 15.6.75, 29.6.75 13.7.75, 20.7.75, 26.7.75, 3.8.75, 7.9.75, 14.9.75, 21.9.75, 12.10.75, 26.10.75, 16.11.75, 23.11.75, 30.11.75, 7.12.75, 14.12.75, 21.12.75, 4.1.76 (show of the year)
A lot of home recordings are missing the first bit at 6pm, it varied little over the years to 1977. I have put how it should sound on the attachment, this from 2.3.1975

Sounds good was it a reel to reel? I have a couple from around that era at Christmas time recorded on one of those 'new' C120 cassettes. The Scotch tape is very cruddy now but the Philips one still plays with no problems.

They were from an ex-engineers collection, and other websites over the years, some are mono, others stereo. I am slowly working on restoring them. i have the original Brother Intro track long and short verions, so have used those in the blank 3-2-1 rundowns. It would be nice to have a list of what exists, as im sure missing shows recorded on tape are much more common than TV shows, and people dont know what they have or if its missing. mine are now all on CDs so easy to find and go through, most in non-restored condition. If i restore improve any it will be on another CD, and be labelled restored. I may have a few surviving cassettes in the loft but havnt seen them in 30 years or so.
Here is a test rundown from a few years back to see if you could overlay Tom onto a record track, and it sould like the original, so this rundown from 1975 is over Baker Street from 1977/8 so at the end of Toms era, as it was not the original track behind his voice it would show up any problems in the overlaying, it would be a lot easier to overlay onto the original record as long as you could sync them up together. Sony Sound Forge has a 32 track recorder built in if you know how to change it.
