The Darts' Boy From New York City was definitely recorded especially for the show as it featured Kenny Andrews and not Den Hegarty, the line-up change occured in late 78 and that tune was a hit in the spring

Thanks Andrew - so, to clarify, does that mean that the broadcast quality version of this early 1980s edition has mute presenter links and there is no complete broadcast quality version as originally transmitted?
By the way, which edition are we talking about? I was under the impression that all TOTP editions from late 1977 onwards existed in their transmitted form and held in broadcast quality formats.

I too was surprised that the 1978 Christmas edition was not studio-based. I would've watched it at the time, and I don't remember it at all.
The Noel Edmonds format of introducing like that reminded of the later Swap Shop pop specials he did. Same idea.
Are there any other TOTP Christmas editions that aren't studio-based? Surely not many??

If I remember rightly, the BBC had just resolved a serious industrial action problem days before Christmas that year (I know this affected a lot of programmes including Swap Shop not been on the air and many of Childrens morning programmes (such as Buck Rogers) were subsequently rescheduled for later on in the holiday. So, I'm suspecting that Noel in the office, was hastily put together with old clips / videos and a few specially recorded inserts, (Abba had obviously filmed a special greeting because they were appearing on that days Mike Yarwood show - liked the plug!). It was quite a surreal experience as I seemed to remember some of the jokes (like legs and company falling out of the cupboard). It was good to see it again, even if the music was very diverse (It seemed OK back in 1978 ) but that was a reflection of how lots of people saw the charts back then, Abba, The Smurfs, Brian and Michael, Boney M, and The Floral Dance! (almost expected Wogan to make a cameo there!), though it was a sigh of relief when Kate Bush came on (funnily enough , I didnt like her music much back then - how times have changed !). Noel Edmonds doesnt seem to have changed though!

so the TOTP '78 trailer tx'd on 23/12/78 (with audience ??) was even more unusual then
see Dr Who's Power of kroll DVD extras for (The Key To Time box set) more info

If I remember rightly, Cliff Richard was supposed to be on that days Swap Shop (23/12/78) and it got cancelled because of the industrial Action and he was on a month or so later and made a comment along the lines of "last time I was here all the lights were switched off"...

The years have been good to Old tidybeard. He still looks fresh. Hats off to Beeb 4!

The BBC4 version came in at 45'29" - the original transmission was 44'31"! The existing copy is a 35mm film recording presumably made as a back up or archival copy of the original 405 line VT, so it's possible that the VT was edited when it first went out, by all of a minute, and the copy that survives wasn't... so all we have to do is work out what we got last night that they didn't see in 1967! I didn't see the BBC4 transmission but i'm guessing that the extra length might be on the playout after end credits (?) as quite a few TOTP have an "expansion joint" in this way, presumably to fill in extra tx time if needed.

Did anyone spot Daves Mistake he said No13 Amen Corner it was in fact No3! ;D As I understand it he was distracted by the "many beautiful girls" perhaps the off screen prompt had something to do with it .I think the jacket was a mistake though a bit too big

My guess would be the end credits were faded out earlier in 1967. Last night's went right to the end of the music. approx the extra minute or so. Just watched 78 Christmas show. Bit of a disapointment, i was expecting a studio based edition. Still very welcome to see it at last though. More please BBC4 Anyone know if there were any 'new' performances from this show that Totp2 have never shown.? Not sure i've seen Darts, Showaddywaddy's & Brotherhood of Man's performances before. does the TR go to the end of the credits ?I've never seen it

For those who didn't catch it - This weeks repeat shows all the credits and then ends with the audience (& Dave Dee and Co) dancing in the studio with the BBCtv Logo on the screen until the music ends and they all start clapping.

that rings a bell, I think I may have seen this somewhere else so do all the existing 60s episodes have their complete endings?

Yes they do, though Feb 69 is a bit of a cut and shut affair with the opening titles and a join during Sandie Shaw's Monsieur Dupont. Xmas '69 only exists as a 10 minute entity with both with opening and closing credits (end being in rehearsal stages)
did anyone spot the slight glitch or two coming out of the perfs back to Noel Edmonds in '78 ?
