I don't know too much about other programmes, but TOTP performances are limited to just "Black Night" from the surviving 15/10/70 edition. There is a 'still' TOTP photo of the band performing "Fireball" from the 16/12/71 edition, but alas it is only a 'still' photo as unfortunately none of the 16/12/71 edition exists.

Save for a couple of American TV clips theres nothing of the original 68-69 Rod Evans era line up on British TV.
From 1970, theres Granada TVs "Doing Their Thing" a 25 minute show featuring a heavily edited live set. Then theres "South Bank Summer" featuring footage of them live at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Of course theres the TOTP "Black Night" - theres also a promo film the bands management made of that song. After that Deep Purple rarely ever appeared on British TV. Indeed the 1971 TOTP "Fireball" no longer exists but there are several stills as opposed to one of them performing that.
Much of what exists comes from European TV... a handful of "Beat Club" from 69 to 71, live footage from Paris in late 1970, the Swedish TV live concert in black and white from 1972... most of it is now officially available.
Like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath they ended up avoiding TV as much as possible from 1971 onwards so sadly like those 2 other bands there isn't as much footage as there could had been.

Oh yeah, or course there is more than just one 'still' of the 16/12/71 "Fireball" performance. I think there are about six in all that i believe can be found on a Deep Purple web site.

Aside : I'm a member (and have been for years) of the Deep Purple Appreciation Society, responsible for quite a few archive releases over the years. In April last year I bid on a roll of 35mm film on Ebay that purported to be cine film of Deep Purple. The listing can still be found here : cgi.ebay.com/RE-LISTED-DEEP-PURPLE-35mm-CINE-FILM-1972-lp-VERY-RARE_W0QQitemZ7605559655QQcategoryZ210QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemUnfortunately, I didn't win the film, it ended up at £112, I bid up to £110. The photos that were on the listing have now disappeared, but one showed the label on the can, and I worked out that it was (probably) just the 'Never Before' promo, which was 'live' film. The promo itself was this 'live' film with the studio recording dubbed over the top, so not too interesting. I prompty contacted the buyer after the auction finished, offering to get the film tele-cined at the BBC (that way I could find out exactly what it was), but I've not heard from him. I wonder what he wanted it for...............

The Granada TV show exists complete. It can be found on a DVD called "Masters From The Vault" alongside the "Beat Club" clips. The Concerto for Group and Orchestra is on an EMI DVD released in 2001 and it is indeed great fun. That was originally released on BBC Video in the early 80s. The DVD is a major improvement since the picture quality of the videotapes left much to be desired plus the DVD boasts a full 5.1 mix.
That black and white clip from 1968 is a priceless find! Have never seen that before... pity the sound is missing and that its so short but its definitely from 1968. "Smoke On The Water" wasnt recorded until December 1971. Its more likely they are seen playing "Hush". The two other Rod Evans era material out there is "Playboy After Dark" on which they performed "Hush" and "And The Address" live (in colour as well) and then theres a 40 minute black and white video of a gig from October 1968 recorded on an amateur videocamera. The picture is very poor and indistinct but the sound is excellent and gives a rare chance to hear a 1968 live performance by them.
I have seen stills from other USTV appearances but whether they exist or not remain to be seen I guess.

Peter, that 1968 performance from the amateur video camera has actually been released ; the audio though, not the video!! It was released offically by the Purrple Fan Club in 2002, on their 'Sonic Zoom' imprint and is called 'Inglewood : Live In California'. Catalogue number is PUR205. It features Hush/Kentucky Woman/Mandrake Root/Help!/Wring That Neck/River Deep, Mountain High/Hey Joe. They were supporting Cream at their last performances and someone from their then record company, Tetragramaton filmed the performance on a very early home video camera! It was filmed on Friday, October 18th 1968.

That was used in 'Rock Family Trees' in (I think) the late nineties. It's from one of the U.S. 'Playboy' shows.

Is this from film stock! Being '68 I'd thought this was an american clip.
