I assume the reason these were taped at the time were to get the hits and save money buying the records; which would have been expensive for all these.

What the tapers didn't realise was that those artists appearing in studio were performing with or miming to special re recordings, most obvious where the TOTP orchestra replaced an orchestral backing.

According to Wikipedia, "...in July 1966, after discussions with the Musicians' Union miming was banned. After a few weeks during which some bands' attempts to play as well as on their records were somewhat lacking, a compromise was reached whereby a specially recorded backing track was permitted...One of the acts on that first 1966 programme was David and Jonathan...Their recording manager, George Martin attended rehearsals to oversee the sound balance. He left, satisfied, after about ten minutes."
Presumably this is that track? Although it's a poor recording, it certainly sounds different to the single version.

Hey all. I'm trying to solve a mystery: what was #1 on Pick/Top of the Pops on July 1, 1964? It was either "It's Over" by Roy Orbison or "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals. I've found conflicting credible sources, some say "It's Over" was #1, others say "House OTRS" was #1. I don't know what to believe. Both were #1 regardless of what happened on July 1, 1964. They were either #1 for 3 weeks and 1 week respectively, or 2 weeks each.

Does anyone have the audio of the July 8, 1964 Top of the Pops show? I've read here and on other sites that it exists. "House OTRS" was #1 that week. If anyone has or has heard the audio of this July 8 show, does the introducing DJ make reference to whether "House" was a new #1 this week, or if it was #1 again this week, implying it was also #1 last week July 1?

Likewise, I've read here and elsewhere that the audio for the Dec 24, 1964 Top of the Pops year-end show recap of #1's still exists. Does anyone have or has heard this? Does the introducing DJ say how many weeks "It's Over" and "House OTRS" were at #1?

Or, did anyone listen to either Pick or Top of the Pops back on July 1 1964, and write down the record positions as they were being played?

I've seen the BBC Top 20/30 that week from the Dave Taylor/Trevor Ager files they copied from the BBC library years ago. Dave and Trevor revised the files several times. At first, they had "It's Over" at #1 that July 1, but they later revised it to "House OTRS". And I've seen online listings of records played on Top of the Pops that week, on at least 4 sites, and they all say "It's Over" was #1 (it could be just one source copied to multiple sites). I'd ask Dave, but he's no longer with us. I contacted Trevor, but haven't heard back, it's been 3 years since I last heard from him.

As an FYI, the BBC took the average of the NME, Melody Maker, Disc, and Record Retailer charts to calculate the Pick/Top of the Pops chart. "It's Over" was #2 on NME, MM, Disc, and #1 on RR. "House OTRS" was #1 on NME, MM, Disc, and #6 on RR. Even though "House" was #1 on 3 charts, when you do the average, "It's Over" comes out ahead. So if the BBC did a manual override of their calculation that week and gave #1 to "House", it would be justified in my mind.

One day I'll get to convert my Dad's old reel to reel tapes. He only had a couple but I distinctly remember playing them as a kid and he'd taped the BBC RADIO Charts run down the week The Beatles and Gerry and the pacemakers shared the UK Number 1 spot. Sharing the top spot used to happen back then. Could this be a reason?

Until someone can do that, could someone please listen to the file and post what the DJ says about #4 "It's Over" by Roy Orbison?  Does he say something like "down from #2 last week, to #4 this week"?  Thanks in advance !!!
