Really? That's interesting! Any idea where the clip surfaced? I presume it's an incomplete clip. Good news anyway - it all goes to prove you just don't know what's out there somewhere!

Ah, maybe they are from that show then. Anyone got good quality complete clips of those performances though? In the doc they are cut off.

I'm assuming the clip if from the October 4th 1963 appearance. As I said it's brief, but as other clips of the show survive, I can only assume it's made its way from the DC archives- who knows?

set me free is on a vhs rock n roll greatest years 1965 i have in my collection . Stephen, I had that in my collection at one stage the Kinks version is from Hullabaloo. Because I have the same version of song with the host presenting it. Namely one Brian Epstein via satellite link via London thru to the states.

Some of the criticism of Dave Clark is a bit harsh - he at least had the foresight to save/buy these RSG clips.
I have clips of the DC5 on RSG and the quality is good - proves the group did appear. These came from an American source of course! It is surprising these were never used on C4 or the videos but I assume they have only just come to light.
Can anybody help with the rumour that a clip of Johnny Kidd and the Pirates has been found?

No clips of the DC5 actually on RSG supposedly exist. So if any exist in the States, this is a first! I wonder what other footage is out there?

Thanks for your info Gordon. I've just checked a superb US book I picked up in Washington DC ten years ago called "The British Invasion in Photos 1962-67" as I remembered it has colour and b/w pics from RSG including The Kinks, The Animals, The Zombies and The Sorrows. According to the intro, it says that Shindig included some RSG performances as they both had a similar format - the only specific performances mentioned are live recordings from the Richmond Blues Festival.
Doing a quick google search, I also found the following quote on Shindig: "The first hour Shindig show, broadcast live from London, was in fact an episode of "Ready Steady Go!", also produced by Jack Good but with titles substituted for the American (ABC TV) market." Perhaps the clips mentioned in this thread come from Shindig? Judging by there being several Shindig videos out (including a British Invasion one), the survival rate looks good. Hopefully someone might have access to Shindig and be able to spot which performances were taken from RSG. This should reveal additional footage not included on the C4 compilations and in the NFTVA.
Laurence, I think the Small Faces were included on the 'Jukebox Heroes' series. Thankfully the Dutch, Swedes, Germans etc seemed far better at keeping footage of the '60s British pop/rock legends than us. Totally agree that it would be good to have unedited copies and without those horrible trivia captions that TOTP2 etc are so fond of. Also The Action released a video of their 1998 reunion gig which includes some original b/w 60s footage so guess that must come from 20th Century Focus. Again I'd love to see it complete. Robstar was spot on that the Action's 'Uptight and Outasight' CD includes 2 audios of The Action on RSG! Fortunately the young Phil Collins regularly attended Action gigs and recorded many of their radio broadcasts. Makes you see him in a different light doesn't it!

Come on Laurence. Phil Collins was ok for the first 4 solo albums including "....But Seriously", but i would agree that he totally lost it after that and has never regained 'it' since then either.
oooppss!! off topic as nothing of Phil's is missing! ;D

Audio of a Kidd appearance has been floating about for a while- starts out with a great live version of "Please Don't Touch," then into an interview with JK, and finally a mimed "I'll Never Get Over You."

Seriously though, has anyone ever checked this out? There may be RSG footage waiting to be recovered in this way. i'd personally never heard of Shindig using RSG footage before now and chances are that it may not result in anything - but it's worth a try.

I think it's an urban myth that Shindig used Ready Steady Go material. Shindig did use material shot in the UK but it was unique to that show - it was an easy way to get British groups on the show - The Beatles, Kinks and The Who all appeared in this way.
Another American show to do this was ABC's 'Where The Action Is' which also has a good survival rate, although is less often seen. WTAI tended to shoot their stuff outside - there are clips around of The Small Faces and The Who filmed around London.
Also, while we're on the subject, The Action, appeared on Where The Action Is (performing Land of a Thousand Dances according to a US list) I've not seen it but it would make two surviving TV permances for the sharp-dressed mod boys.
There's plenty of Shindig to be seen on the YouTube site and a couple of bits of Where The Action Is (including The Blues Magoos!).

Given that RSG was repeated across the UK network later on those glorious Friday evenings. Has anyone checked regional film libraries to see if any have survived there? I am right in saying, am I not, that the show went out live, and then was repeated later in the day (and at different times) across the UK. Presumably, the show was either telecined or taped. Worth a try? S
