This is only a guess (so I might get my head bitten off again...), but perhaps the BBC thought it was the least interesting part of their original MBW schedule (with Morcambe and Wise), so only cleared one screening, and had to stick with that when M&W had to be dropped, leading to two showings of Dad's Army. That wouldn't explain why they decided the second MBW night had to be shorter though... Maybe you could try contacting the schedulers via the www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour site?

I didn't catch the repeat, as I watched the initial transmission, but the "Missing Believed Wiped" slot was cut into two on its New Year's Eve repeat. Wasn't "The Old Campaigner" shown in the second slot, New Year's Day, 0305am?
Apologies if I'm barking up the wrong tree.
Jim.

In the second slot of the repeat they just showed the documentary again (because it was cheaper to do that maybe?). So I'm really glad I caught the first night's showing, too! ;D
