RE-watching sounds of the sixties repeats on BBC4 and I was wondering why the Sonny and Cher clip for 'I got You Babe' starts off in lovely pristine video and then towards the end switches to a TR.... how is it that only half the clip exists still on video? Was the rest of the tape damaged?? Sorry if this has been answered before elsewhere!

That's how it always appears when used anywhere. Seems there's an alternate (telerecorded) version in addition to the video one. The two have been spliced.

I asked this question last year and no one knew then either, thinking about it it may be possible that the first half was used as a clip in something else and so the first half was used because its better but it is a puzzle.

Is it not from that engineer who taped a few TOTP bits - he only taped half of the Stones doing 'Not Fade Away', so is it possible he only taped half of Sonny and Cher too?
Seems strange that they bothered to marry the (presumably complete) TR and the (better quality, but incomplete) VT, but it's nice they made the effort.
Obviously, all the above is guesswork on my part - no doubt someone will be along to correct me in a minute!

Well, the Stones clip is a telerecording and the (larger part of the) Sonny and Cher clip is on tape. The two were not likely recorded by the same person. The VT clips from '65 seem to all be from one source whereas the other existing stuff of early TOTP seems to be from disparate sources. Don't know the answer to why the S & S song is on two different formats though - does anyone here?

were the VT dubs later than the TR copies or vice versa or was it a mix? and when were they done roughly late 60s? early 70?

I seem to recall reading some years back when "Sounds of the 60's" was first launched an interview with one of the researchers on the programme who commented that they found a clip of S&C in the VT format that was either damaged or missing on the second half of the clip but they still had the "film" version complete (I'm sorry about my poor knowledge of techie terms for these things) and by putting the two pieces of material together were able to come up with a decent showing of that song.
Hope this helps.
