Does anyone know when Top of the Pops was first broadcast in stereo? I think it was in 1989.

The 1000th show (5/5/83) (clips available on the TOTP2 website) was broadcast as a simulcast with Radio 1 in stereo, although as far as I remember this was a one-off back then. At some stage, pre-NICAM, I believe this set-up was used for the regular editions but I don't remember when.

Yes, I remember in the late 80s we used to listen to TOTP on Radio 1 via our old Dynatron music centre.

I've got several TOTP's from 1990 which were broadcast in stereo simutaneously on Radio One. I also have the corresponding Radio 1 stereo recordings, but of course, you can only marr the two up for about 2 mins before they go horribly out of sync!

Thanks for the replies & info on this subject. How do folks feel if old episodes were re-broadcast in stereo (where mimed) or do folks prefer the intergrity of the original mono broadcasts?

I prefer the hi-fi stereo, as used on Baby Love and I Got You Babe. The sound quality is dreadful on You've Lost that Lovin Feeling where it hasn't been replaced - but surely that was also mimed?
