I checked with someone who has a very extensive collection of Eurovision recordings: a very short fragment from the 1964 program does survive (about 1 minute from the opening of the show and reprise).
Best regards, John

As I understood it, all of the Eurovision shows existed (within the archives of at least one countries' TV company o another) - except the start of the 1970 show (due to an error at the time). Hadn't heard of 1964 completely missing as well.

Well, 1956 doesnt exist on video unless the BBC kept their highlights programme thye allegedly showed the day after the contest.
The only clip from 1964 I've seen is of Gigliola Cinquetti coming down the stairs (Presumably after she won) to sing the reprise. I can't imagine that one clip survives and nothing else. I reckon RAI might have a copy in Italy but their archives are notoriously disorganised.

Dear ALL So far ESC 1964 still missing. All of 1970 now exists ( albeit partly B/W) I found one and let the rest of the fan club know so it is in circulation now. ASM

Dear All
Time to take a look at the current situation with regard to the Eurovision Song Contest
TV Brain today says
16.03.58 Episode No 1 The only known complete copy was recorded on a domestic video format (e.g. VHS, Beta, Philips 1500)
11.03 59 Episode No. 2 (missing)
18.03.62 With Mireille, Ronnie Carroll, David Jacobs The only known complete copy was recorded on a domestic video format (e.g. VHS, Beta, Philips 1500)
05.05.84 With Belle and the Devotions The only known complete copy was recorded on a domestic video format (VHS, Beta, Philips 1500)
Kaleidoscope advises today, with regard to the 11.03.59 Contest, that, The BBC have the French version, sourced from RTF in the 1990s. That is why TV Brain says it is missing, because the BBC version is missing.

Would these copies be the same in every country in the 50s and 60s? Because I've just spotted a contender for at least two of them.

As a quick guide, every Eurovision Song Contest exists somewhere in various European archives, with the exception of the 1956 and 1964 contests of which only some small fragments or clips exist. As far as the versions broadcast by the BBC, ie complete with the commentaries by Terry Wogan, David Jacobs (or whoever the commentator of the day was), then the BBC have retained, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1974 (partially missing some of the commentary on the voting), then all the contests from 1975 onwards, with the curious exception of 1984, which exists on domestic format (with Terry Wogan commentary), although the BBC also has access to the RTE broadcast version. The BBC version of 1971 also exists on a domestic format. All the other contests exist (barring the two mentioned above), a few such examples are 1957 held by NDR, 1959 by ORTF, 1962 by NOS, 1967 ORF, 1969 NRK, with some contests being held by more than one broadcaster 1968 for example is held by both SVT and NRK. But the two most sought after are the currently missing 1956 and 1964 contests.

But at any rate, its winning performance from 1964 still exists, as a clip of nearly two minutes.

This is now listed as existing in full in the French Tv archives. There is a link to the record of the recording on Wikipedia. No one seems to have taken the trouble to get the copy to the EBU though!
