On looking through the Database, I see that there are 2 existing performances listed under 23/12/71: Tony Christie - "Is This The Way To Amarillo" Middle Of The Road - "Soley Soley" Questions:- Was a regular edition broadcast on 23/12/71?
- If so, what were the rest of the tracks?
Any more info would be gratefully appreciated.

The two tracks were on an insert tape used by ZDF, I believe. The details for the show they came from you should find on the TOTP Database now.

Yes, i've just checked the database and there is an entry for that date (23/12/71) - not sure why it's there like it is though as there was no edition on that date. This was most likely the date the insert tape was compiled.
Assuming the two songs are from the same edition then that must be 2/12/71. Otherwise they have been culled from separate shows around this time (several use these songs at various times).
Give it time and all these little bugs will be ironed out! It's such a huge chunk of info that little things like this will occur. If someone can make a list of all those spotted, then it would be easier to amend the database.

Deep Purple never made a TOTP appearance for Fireball, i'm afraid - it was the record being played.
Do you know of something specific that's in private hands then, Pete? Can you provide further details so it can ve looked into?

Fireball : was spotted within a trading post page somewhere
also I have solved TOTP 10/02/72
during The rock and roll years 1972 a newspaper of that day stated power strikes et all, so thats where that show went
I assume..............

If Fireball was offered for sale somewhere then it would have been from another programme, not TOTP. Maybe it was Deep Purples' Disco appearance; whatever, trading forums are notorious for getting their facts wrong or making ambitious claims about what's on offer!
There was no TOTP edition on 10/2/72; no great mystery really. This happened sometimes, for whatever reason (e.g. sports coverage etc - the world HAS to stop revolving for sport, after all, or so programme planners would have us believe!)

From what I've read in my Deep Purple CD booklets, the missing performance is from December 1970 and is "A Strange Kind of Woman", which was from the Fireball sessions.
Fireball came out as a single shortly before the album was released in mid 1971.

I will check the 16/12/71 entry for Deep Purple on the original documentation; it may be an error that occured in the transferral to database - I can't recall there being any Fireball studio performances myself (although I may be wrong!)

In answer to someone's query here - you were right! I checked the original documentation and Fireball on 16/12/71 WAS a studio appearance by Deep Purple! I have typed so many now that I can't keep track! Oh, for a photographic memory!

I have typed so many now that I can't keep track! Oh, for a photographic memory! Yes, Purple flew in to mime to Fireball on TOTP from Switzerland, where they were recording their Machine Head album. The Fireball footage in circulation isn't from TOTP though there are photos of this visit to TOTP. Nigel
