Yeah, good on any employees who liberated stuff from the 'trash can'. I dont think anyone on this forum would want to call them villains. And there probably is loads of material left to locate out there.........

And there probably is loads of material left to locate out there......... Any recovered material is welcome, but I doubt there's still a huge quantity out there. If we're talking missing shows from the 1950s through to the mid 1970s, I'd be surprised if more than a handful come back each year. Speaking of which, has anything of note reappeared so far this year?

All being well, I will be at the National Film Theatre next week. So, I will make an enquiry as to whether anything of note has turned up.
Yours,

Much appreciated. I live in hope of more major recoveries, though certain fan groups seem to have unrealistic expectations. Like some who still expect 108 missing episodes of Dr Who to turn up...? Could be. I'd be amazed - and delighted - if even one more 'Who' episode is recovered. It would take a TV-related miracle for the missing total to drop below 100. Unless, of course, the much debated Zambian archive proves to be an Aladdin's cave of lost BBC material.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I'd be jumping for joy myself. However, the naive insistence of some individuals' belief that they'll all come back never ceases to astound me...

Oh, don't get me wrong - I'd be jumping for joy myself. However, the naive insistence of some individuals' belief that they'll all come back never ceases to astound me... Absolutely. I remember one BBC archivist pointing out, years ago, that some fans - and I think it's a tiny minority - refuse to accept that many episodes are gone for good. After a certain point, healthy optimism can turn into delusion. I'd love to see more missing episodes of 'A for Andromeda', 'Out of the Unknown' and 'Doomwatch' recovered but I doubt it will happen.

Me too but one needs to be realistic.

Exactly. If no one bothered to save "Doomwatch" Survival Code then I'd tend to doubt that Friday's Child is out there...

Like some who still expect 108 missing episodes of Dr Who to turn up...? In all fairness though, if episode 2 of DMP can turn up then all bets are off ! I wonder. 'Day of Armageddon' was returned by a former BBC employee who'd kept the print safe for over 30 years. As I recall, this episode - plus a print of 'The Daleks' part five - had been kept for testing 16mm projectors before being consigned to the junk pile in 1972. I'd guess this was a one-off occurrence. At the risk of going over old ground, the rate of return for 'Who' episodes has declined drastically since the 1980s. Maybe more will come back but I'd bet that the missing total stays over the 100 mark.
