In his book "The Television Heritage" from 1989, Steve Bryant writes as follows. These tapes are almost certainly the source of fainting-judge/bloke-jumping-on-eggs stuff. They seem first to have be mined for clips in 1992 for "TV Hell"... Already virtually doomed is material held on early domestic tape formats manufactured by Sony, Shibaden and Philips. The pictures from these tapes are very poor- indeed, the Sony and Shibaden reel-to-reel tapes are monochrome only - but some unique collections exist on these formats. Most significant is a virtually complete collection of the BBC magazine programme Nationwide from 1971 to 1980, mostly on Sony and Shibaden, but on Philips for the programmes after 1977. This collection is held by the NFA and represents the only copies of the complete programmes in existence.
The BBC has all the film reports and a small selection of pre-recorded video inserts, but the programmes themselves were live and were not recorded off-air. Neither the machinery nor the funds are currently available to save the contents of these tapes, so a valuable daily record of British life in the 70s, including a large number of live interviews with leading politicians and celebrities of the time, looks like being lost. That may be the case with the majority of recording, but not them all, what a rather poor description. Yes the dates are 9th December 1980 (Nationwide only, no regional segment) and 18 February 1981 (South Today, but missing first couple of minutes and all of Nationwide). Of the 1983 shows, there's one from July and the penultimate and last ever editions from August (I'm sure the last 2 must exist officially) .

The BBC does have the complete 9/12/80 programme, but doesn't have 18/2/81 (apart from the film inserts). All the Nationwides from July 1983 are held on broadcast formats.

Thanks Andrew. Do you think they're interested in acquiring VHS-standard copies or aren't they fussed?

I think the Kinks footage showing Ray chatting about houses in Muswell Hill being demolished was originally on Nationwide.
This was included in another show of the Kinks in concert.

I've done a bit of research on this myself, trying to guess which of the items I personally remember might be using the following documentations.
This is just a selection; I'm assuming the first date for 69 exists by what Andrew details; and that any edition dated for Sep - Oct 1970 exists as a complete recording. Some of the entries are marked 'media - film' and as most or almost definitely inserts I'm assuming these are specials all made on film.
In addition to Andrews list there appears to be a dub I think for January 1974 of most of one edition which cuts off before th end of the programme. My assumption is this may be an off air privately recorded on Shibaden and transferred over; explaining why it cuts off; possibly the 'fainting peeress' edition (also referred to as fainting judges in previous posts).
where subjects are itemised my assumption is these are each of the topics covered in existing film inserts.

Does anyone know editions had the series of reports where Bob Wellings went undercover dressed as a tramp for six weeks?
He tried to find out what it was like to be down and out in London.
It was around 1976 or 77.

Just to say - I note there was a series on this but run in 1981! I seemed to remember a friend reading a book on this about 1976 - 77.
From that period (looked it up); there was one item on 'welfare of the destitute' in 1975.

I,m sure it was Nationwide who followed Genesis on tour in early 1978,behind the scenes on the "and then there were 3"tour.I know I have a rough audio copy somewhere.

Wasn't the Bob Wellings thing called 'Down and Out'?

Was it Wellings?
I seem to remember it being a less recognisable at the time reporter, Paul (?) Wilkinson.

Wasn't the Bob Wellings thing called 'Down and Out'? Yes; I think I may have got this mixed up with a book a friend had; possibly based on the reports. It could have been one of the related 'NW' series rather than the show itself. These included 'NATIONWIDE ON THE ROAD'; which Andrew Martin quotes as existing. I would think the item I mention does exist; pin pointing and identifying it is the difficult part.
