I'm hoping this is not too far off the topic considering it concerns once lost (and now found) copies of episodes. But I was curious why the RSC (the format, not the theater) versions of the episodes were being included on the Season 9 box set? Surely we're getting the best possible version since the technology has improved since then and it seems to me this would be a redundant and lesser quality version (but I could be wrong). Thoughts anyone?

I’m not sure that everything exists on 2” PAL VT - that’s the gold standard.
I remember watching the Sea Devils DVD and considered that several episodes weren’t quite as good as others. When I checked I found that these only survived as NTSC versions and had been through RSC. My view was that a little more DNR - Digital Noise Reduction - might pay dividends 👍 It’s been quite a few years since many of these stories were looked at and the BluRay release is supposedly looking at everything again.

I hope Ambassadors Of Death has both versions as the off-air vhs was fine but the dvd had what I call brown washes to some sequence, episode 3s opening is the best comparison where the RSC failed to deliver a full color image but only cos of the prints condition.

Are you talking about Reverse Standards Conversion or Colour Recovery? The former is taking a NTSC video recording that’s been converted from PAL and converting it back to PAL. The latter is recovering the colour information from a black and white telerecording.

VHS - plain film and off-air overlay Dvd - color recovery from film The brown I'm referring to the dvd release, yea I'm aware of the chroma dot recovery and how it's dependent not purely on the dots but also the condition of the film can affect the final result.
