£799 and a trip to Hampshire! Does this exist in an archive? In fairness I think myself that Disney/ABC have it safely on tape somewhere. They told me they had nothing to report but it was in a VERY roundabout way and I was not representing anything important. So this was certainly a surprise, but it may not be the last copy in the world just yet.

You could fill up an entire book detailing all the unsold American TV pilots - many of which are only available via worn VHS recordings. I'm not sure why Disney would unearth this at any time soon. It's just one of hundreds of unsold pilots. (if they do indeed have it in their archives)
I've no idea who the seller is but it's probably the only way anyone will get to see it in the foreseeable future.
As the listing clearly states: no rights are implied - so were this to end up in an archive, then this may well end up locked away yet again for a while. Which would be a shame given that the generations that still remember the original Up Pompeii won't be around much longer. I was born in 76 and I don't remember ever seeing it - although I do remember my parents speaking highly of it whenever it was mentioned on the telly.

Up Pompeii TV series is all on YouTube & has been for years, so dont wait any longer to aquaint yourself with it www.youtube.com/channel/UCU4Y5QlidVCjWOEo0V7ZuHQ/videosThey are all self contained stories so it doesnt really matter what order you watch them in, but the transmission order is here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_Pompeii! Alsdo available on DVD.

Hmm well, most of us probably know where to find youtube, and google. You could fill up an entire book detailing all the unsold American TV pilots - many of which are only available via worn VHS recordings. I'm not sure why Disney would unearth this at any time soon. It's just one of hundreds of unsold pilots. I was born in 76 and I don't remember ever seeing it - although I do remember my parents speaking highly of it whenever it was mentioned on the telly. People have done that - fill entire books with the details of unsold pilots I mean. That was the surprising thing - this one was NOT in there. For whatever reason, Up Pompeii is not totally forgotten, comedy afficionado's do know it. Although of course it's not exactly widely known. But it had an audio revival a few years back.

Yes, nearly just as surprising because I never expected to see that anytime soon. Although we knew it existed from books/IMDb.

A 16mm print of this has just been posted on eBay UK – somebody needs to step in... Anyone got an update on this? For various reasons I am certain that it was 100% genuine. The film was quickly sold, I'm not sure the auction wasn't in fact ended early. I believe it got a good home, i.e. an archive bought it rather than a collector who might have kept it for himself. Given the fact that they were remaking a few classic comedies a few years ago, I wonder if the BBC or another channel couldn't simply show this as-is. Most "US pilots" are horrible trainwrecks, but I suspect that this one wasn't that bad; Frankie's unique, cheeky 4th wall style probably baffled American test audiences who had no idea who he was. The networks probably toyed with it for 2-3 years, and changed the name. It was largely based on S1E5, "The actors" but a new pair of writers is credited. Hopefully one day we may be able to see it somehow & somewhere.

I couldn't find it on ebay...though come to think of it, I was checking the UK site. Anyone got a link? Hopefully, it did end in a sale to an archive, rather than getting withdrawn.
