Hello all. I co-host the 42 to Doomsday podcast. Our latest episode has an interview with a Aron Challinger, who runs a pop culture store here in Melbourne. He handles deceased estates as part of his work, and came across an estate of a man who can only be described as a hoarder. Long story short, the gentlemen recorded Australian television from at least the early 70s onto a variety of formats, and kept it all. Reel to reel, umatic, beta, VHS, and some other formats that appear to be earlier than umatic. While we can't be definitive, it's possible that the surviving tapes (let Aron tell you the story behind that) may have some missing material (likely Australian, but its possible UK as well). The verification of what's on them will be a long, arduous task, but the tapes themselves are in good hands. Anyway, here's the link. vyb42todoomsday.podbean.com/e/42-to-doomsday-unleash-the-hoarders/

Reel to reel would be even earlier...!
A surprisingly well-informed man. The only thing, as in really the ONLY detail, where he was a bit off the realistically possible was in mentioning I Claudius - rather, he should keep an eye out for BBC comedy. But he did already know about The Goodies' lost episode.

That podcast is absolutely fascinating and very exciting...lets just hope the Family didnt out do the BBC and there really is some material to find on Dr Who . The two friends of the Collector that said he promised them the material or first dibs, maybe they need more investigation too...its all very promising . A listen well worth the time.

There was a guy that dug up a landfill to find a wedding ring and another guy that found a missing computer game in landfill.

Sounds similar to the American woman who recorded TV for 40 odd years.
I heard about Atari burying unsold cartridges years ago when I was getting into classic computing.

how many years ago did he pass away and has anything been identified as previously lost yet?

He died a few months ago. No major updates yet. Most of the finds are presumably of Australian origin. It could take years of combing.

Ten years, was the estimation I think. We must hope that the open reel videos are done first.

That seems rather long, but there's a ton of computer files to check through as well.

Personally I also think we need to find these two friends, if they had an agreement , one way or another they must know some or all of the material this guy had or they wouldnt be so angry. They may be able to tell us what he had, where it was and could be a great help. Hopefully this sad event can only convince collectors to make sure that they make arrangements for their collections and that one or two people know. This mans family dumped huge amounts of material before it became clear what was happening, we may have lost lost Who etc, thank god we'll never know.
