Let's just say that whilst the central kernel of this story is correct, there are also an awful lot of embellishments that have been added to it and assumptions made. I'm open to hearing the full story so we don't make false judgment

The anecdote how it nearly went wrong or didn't go wrong, that is the curse of all half-lost programs...!
See if you can spot the errors:
"BBC taped over the Avengers" "Terry Gilliam absconded with the VHS tapes with Monty Python on it" "Charlie Chaplin had every Benny Hill episode on tape in a special room" "Peter Cook wasn't allowed to buy the NOBA master tapes"
All rubbish, isn't it. Actually in that last case I have no idea, if, and what, the grain of truth would be.

I recall hearing that the person in question didn't like Doctor Who and was purposely being vindictive.
I don't necessarily believe that, mind.

I recall Paul’s summary of this event, as I remember it the station in question got through to someone at the beeb (not reception) possible a temp/intern doing holiday cover, asked someone more senior if it was ok to message back (fax?) and they said yes ok to destroy the films. Apparently the person on holiday would have realised the importance of the offer! Talk about bad timing!

Did the BBC ever try to contact the station again after the mistake was realized?
