Hi all,
I've had a go at recreating some individual scenes from missing stories-
The audio is all taken from the Lost Episodes Audiobooks, with most of the footage taken from existing clips from other Classic Who stories. I tried to match it up as best I could to the original story, based off telesnaps where there were some.
Am looking for feedback on what people think, they're not perfect so any suggestions for improvement are definitely welcome

Very impressed, anything that puts flesh on the bones gets my vote....the Wheel in Space is the better clip as the footage fits so much easier. Well done.

Wow thank you both, that's very kind! Agreed about the Wheel in Space one being a better fit, thankfully the parts we do have of that story make filling in the blanks much easier |

Super impressed by the Wheel in Space one, I think the only thing that could improve it would be to align the mouths to the audio to be honest.
A difficult task indeed, well worth the watch and I look forward to more.

A difficult task indeed, well worth the watch and I look forward to more. With CGI, I think this technique would work great to animate the mouths to the dialog. Would be a great way to restore single missing episode stories like, tenth planet, or Web of Fear. With a lot of material to borrow from. If done right, this technique could build realistic seeming episodes that could pass for the originals. With Tenth Planet and Web of fear, as example, it could make these stories commercially viable for Broadcast, streaming, DVD etc... as complete restored stories. The only thing preventing this would be cost. IMHO |

IMHO This is super possible without conventional CGI, there's a few new AI's which can take existing images and footage and then lip sync audio to that footage. It is quite worth doing and I would do it if I knew what I was doing. Here's a link to a video someone made with the technique used: |

You may find this interesting...
The wav2lip lip-syncing is crude, but it further demonstrates the potential of utilising surviving footage if syncing the mouth-movements to the audio can be improved to the point of being wholly convincing and, just as crucially, the footage is well-selected and matches the emotions being exhibited. The shots here generally match well, except for the last shot of the Doctor where, from the audio, he is clearly very agitated.
For those that prefer recons over animations, it could become a useful tool in the box to add to other existing techniques such as CGI animations. With rotoscoping to place characters against other backgrounds it could become even more interesting. As with any technique though, its only as good as it's implementation.
It's good to see that there are still folks out there interested in reconstructing missing material. So many lost interest when the animations began. I encourage you to continue your efforts!

I like to encourage all recon attempts
The bar for dr who recons is loose cannon. And Josh snares(who did an amazing dmp)
How can we make them better?
I personally prefer non narrated. You could use the soundtrack from lc if other copies aren't available
I think the matching up with clips is great.
One possibility is to start with one episode that you're comfortable with and learn as you develop techniques.
There is much software for photo and video animation so it makes the job easier. Take some time to learn composites, recognize tonalities and match with facial expressions. .. my thoughts are the next level will be cgi software.
If you want something practical not requiring cgi maybe consider reconstruction of other shows than dr who.
One thing I'd be willing to recon is A for Andromeda ep 7..i can get the telesnaps and existing footage but can't locate the audio (which exists).

Surely, the best candidate for this sort of recon is stories which mostly exist. Like Web of Fear?
