I haven’t watched the recon and barely remember the existing episode but I read the novel not too long ago and enjoyed it very much.

I saw Space Pirates twice. In my humble pre-teen opinion, it looked beautiful, had music to match, and I loved that bolshy old coot Milo Clancy. It wasn't quite as good as Seeds of Death, slightly better than Krotons (which had wonky monsters, but also Troughton and Padbury in great form), and very much better than Dominators.

Space Pirates is a guilty pleasure of mine. Would love to see this animated as well. Hopefully someday it will be. With the limited sets and space settings it would be cheaper in my view than say animating The Crusades.
So yes I'd say Space Pirates would be worth it. I believe it is a sleeper story very much like Enemy of the World was before it was found.

Loved the Space Pirates, though I do appreciate the hate it gets.
Perhaps Robert Holmes was so confident that the Space Corps sequences would interest the viewers enough to not miss the Doctor in the first two episodes? But as far as I'm concerned, the story really picks up with Part 3.
There's a lot of mystery to the story; apart from Episode 1 and a few model photos of Episode 3, we have no photographs of the majority of the story. Heck, if we didn't have Episode 2, we wouldn't even know what Madeline Issigri or Milo Clancy looked like. And having no visuals of Caven and his cronies on screen apart from the photos is a shame. The soundtrack has Dudley Foster giving a cold and menacing performance for the character, and the photos of those silly spacesuits don't do them justice.
Animation would work wonders for the story. They could take advantage of the space sequences by having CG cel-shaded spacecraft flying around, and stuff like that. I guess the only thing holding it back is the fact that the audio, particularly Episodes 4 and 5, is pretty bad. It's hard to hear what characters are saying sometimes. Maybe Mark Ayres could fix the audio a bit more like he did with the Invasion missing episodes' soundtracks? I don't know.
Makes me wonder why stories like The Savages weren't picked either. That one has limited sets too, and the audio quality seemed to be the best of all those that Graham Strong recorded. AND it was a companion departure story.
Still, I love The Space Pirates. In my opinion the story is great. It's no classic by any means, but it's definitely better than The Dominators and The Krotons.
I'd also love to have seen how tense the last scene was with the race against time in the atomic fuel store, as well as seeing the Doctor frying a Space Pirate. And they say Colin Baker was dark, lol

Season Two says the BluRay folks are looking at b&w seasons and Space Pirates is the fly in the ointment for Season Six. The lack of telesnaps is a big problem and animation costs £££. Unless telesnaps - extremely unlikely as they probably never existed - turn up or more episodes are recovered - probably slightly more likely than telesnaps, but still very unlikely, what’s done?
I’m reminded why there’s an Oval Office in the White House - so the president can’t go and cry in a corner!

There were no tele snaps taken for "The Space Pirates" so there not out there waiting to be discovered. Personally I dont' see season 4 or season 5 coming out as a boxed set as the will want the animations to sell on there own for a while.

Animation would work wonders for the story. They could take advantage of the space sequences by having CG cel-shaded spacecraft flying around, and stuff like that. They could also improve on the visuals of the interiors of the LIZ79 and V41 - replace the computer half-inch tape reels and the 405-line telly with futuristic consoles. They could also devise an impressive freighter dock, atomic fuel store and mine galleries instead of the BBC stock tunnel walls that were probably used. As for telesnaps, I read somewhere that John Cura was unavailable for doing telesnaps of Season 6 due to illness.

What Space Pirates really needs for a chance to be animate is better audio. The ones we have are terrible. 1-3 and 6 are decent, but there are parts of episodes 4-5 could be almost inaudible.

i quite like the story ,like Enemy of the world for many years the only episode we had was a clinker with the dullness of milo Clancey breakfast scene taking up too much of the episode instead of exciting space pirate action ,hears hoping that a better quality audio can be found before any S6 collection set is released (and a few more images so the recon team have something more to work on )
