TVPOPDIARIES has an intriguing entry for Wednesday 26 January 1966Southern (Television) Six Shades Of Ketty 9.10 - 9.30 pm Originally intended as a 45 minute special, due to be shown 5th December 1965. Ketty Lester - Yesterday, plus five others. I have found some additional gen, which reads ... Ketty Lester stars with songs from blues to ballads with the Peter King Quintet. So we know what 2 of the Six Shades were, can anyone find out more surrounding the other 4 please? Mike Mansfield has once more devised and produced a musical show which has been accepted by the Network. Mike was born in 1940, so in 1965 he was 25, so a very young producer! It makes us wonder what the other musical shows were, before he devised and produced this one? Can anyone look into this please? Ketty Lester will be appearing in the first British television show of her own. Quite a landmark for her! Yet on here www.kettylester.comUnder About, select Filmography which leads to Film and TV there is no mention of this landmark. Would someone less bashful than myself, like to contact the website and advise them of this Show, as it may be of great value to them. And they in turn, could ask Ketty if she was given a copy, either of the full 45 minute special or the transmitted 20 minute networked version, to take back with her to the States? What this website does have - is a great photo of Ketty with Kathy Kirby and underneath it says - on Southern TV's 'Day by Day' 1964 They both look great in their 1964 dresses and hair styles - the question is Did they actually sing together in this television appearance. Moreover is this a television appearance by Kathy Kirby, up to now, previously unknown about? Are Six Shades Of Ketty and this edition of Day By Day 1964, known to exist or are they Missing? Under the Film and TV it has appearances for Ketty on Thank Your Lucky Stars, Ready Steady Go, The Eammon Andrews Show and Juke Box Jury with their dates. Did Ketty also appear on Top Of The Pops and any other BBC or ITV music shows too - around this time? Was she resident here or a frequent visitor to these shores?

just a mention about Mike Mansfield - he seemed to be the pop guru at Southern TV, he did the 'Ladybirds' series about girl singers.... ... and also the pop group long special 'A Tale of Two Rivers' shot in Paris and London from Southern's production VTR kitted out boat. Being a VTR it probably does not exist anymore, but a filmed sequence with Cathy Mcgowan and Dave Clark on a speed boat in the Thames does appear to have survived.

That reminds me I have a good quality domestic open-reel audio recording of Lulu's appearance on the 'Two Rivers' series. Judging from a slip of paper in the tape box, it seems that whoever recorded it was a fan of hers, capturing several tv appearances around that time, including a performance of 'To Sir With Love on The Golden Shot 30/12/67 (not mentioned on the attached list).
Anyway not wanting to hi-jack William's thread, back to the plot and Ketty Lester....

William - TPTV now own the rights to much of Southern TV output- but don't get too excited as they have failed to show anything from the 60s or anything musical AFAIK (maybe because they haven't found the stuff or music rights problems?)....also contacting TPTV is probably a waste of time they have their own agenda, which is a bit different to the public accessible image they give out, and while you might think they sound as enthusiastic as you over your 'Six Shades' that is as far as it will go.
A great discovery and will try and get it on IMDB as Ketty needs more attention.

'A Warm Summer Day' is from the 1963 film 'Just for Fun' nostalgiacentral.com/movies/movies-by-decade/movies-1960s/just-for-fun-1963/

We now have all 6 Shades, listed as In this show she embraces ballads and evergreens. They range from the haunting Love Letters to a stealing I Feel Pretty, from a soulful Yesterday to a jubilant Didn't It Rain, Where Is Love? from Oliver and Once Upon A time from The American I Feel Pretty - from West Side Story 1961 Didn't It Rain - the Negro spiritual, popularised by Sister Rosetta Tharpe Once Upon A Time from The American - may be the 1962 musical All American Broadway Show There is a connection between Six Shades Of Ketty and The Tale Of Two Rivers, mentioned by Peter Stirling above, TVPOPDIARIES has under A Tale of Two Rivers Ketty Lester(who had had her own Southern TV Special) had been hired to appear when the production was due to begin in late February or early March 1966. Whether Ketty ever appeared in A Tale Of Two Rivers is not clear, hopefully someone can look into this please? Peter Stirling also mentioned above, about Dave Clark and Cathy McGowan being filmed in a speedboat on the Thames For those who would like to see this, it is available on there - with search term Colouring The Past - The Dave Clark Five - Catch Us If You Can 3.25 minutes Speedboat appears in first minute or so!

Thanks William I think 'Tale of Two Rivers' (along with Ketty) was brutally treated by the big boys on the network..some showing bits of it to fill whatever slot hole they had and so if by some miracle a copy is discovered it might be one of numerous edits. I suppose it depends if Ketty was still in town when TOTR was filmed? or came back at the request of Mike Mansfield, a clue might be if her US schedule for the time could be found.

Was this definitely A Tale of Two Rivers? And not from the surviving Southern Chartbusters show that featured Dave Clark?
