I can recall something about The Highlanders being screened privately in Australia or New Zealand (I think New Zealand) in the 70s. Perhaps something to do with a native community? Iβve just remembered this and it has really bugged me.

I can't be the only one who thought of Carry On Up the Khyber when I saw the title of this thread!

Only rumour I am aware of for that serial was printed by DWB in the mid to late 1980s. In the wake of a recovery - possibly Evil 2 and Faceless Ones 3 - the fanzine again highlighted the missing episodes. The editor received an anonymous letter from someone claiming to be in possession of Highlanders 2 and 4. They apparently had no plans to return them but would do so if another private collector surrendered two similarly missing episodes. I recall the episode numbers as it struck me they were the same as the surviving Moonbase prints.

The only speculation I remember hearing about The Highlanders is people wondering how much of the film material existed for how long into the 1980s for John Nathan-Turner to have been able to give that tiny trim from it to Fiona Cumming.

A long time ago (20+ years), there was a very strong rumour that Highlanders 1-4, Macra 1-4 and two episodes of Power had been recovered. Turned out to be completely false, but it had a lot of traction at the time. No idea where it came from.

I remember a couple of rumours about The Highlanders in the 1980's. The hardest one to believe was that Fraser Hines had it.

I also remember a rumour in the 1980's that Highlanders 1-4 and Web 5-6 were held by a private collector, however I don't think anyone gave it any credence. Sadly, the absence of the Highlanders in the episodes returned from Australia in June 1975 does not encourage belief in any rumours of its recovery.

Hi,yes it seemed more than just a rumour, back in the 1980s, in Essex I went to my local comic shop and in the window was a paper notice saying... Highlanders and Macra Terror, Found. As you can imagine it was very disappointing to this teenager at the time, someone deffinatly thought it was coming back to the archives. To this day I still wondered, what that was all about.

There was a guy who fancied himself a science fiction journalist, in short they were extremely bad news.
He claimed The Highlanders had seven missing episodes. When I suggested it probably only could have up to and including four missing episodes (for reasons) he responded with some racist abuse.
If he didn't resemble a supervillain enough, his site's Wiki page was full of extreme puffery, which Admins cut down to size.
