Nice one, Peter! Looks like TOTP for sure, judging from the mics and the background. (Just noticed that the spoken bit with the megaphone has been overdubbed with the whistling section of the song... odd!)

Definitely, Top of the Pops....only thing is whether is it 11th May OR 1st June 1967 performance.

Something's bugging me about this clip - that's not the original soundtrack, is it? I wonder what happened to the spoken megaphone bit and why it was overdubbed with the whistling section? Also, compare the shots at 0:22 and at 2:25, it looks like exactly the same few frames repeated. Could this have been a repair job?

Could this have been a repair job? 192 TV almost always overdub the original soundtrack (a bit annoying whenever there was previously a live vocal!), as well as do occasional re-edits. So I'm guessing that they only had incomplete footage to play with.

Is this from a wiped TOTP?

Is this from a wiped TOTP? Seems like it is definitely a TOTP performance, but it is unclear whether only the 1 song survived (perhaps from an overseas rebroadcast?) or more. Would be nice if the 1st June 1967 episode survives - other performances include The Small Faces (Here Comes The Nice), The Hollies (Carrie Anne) and The Kinks (Waterloo Sunset)!

It's not really my area, but couldn't this originally be from toppop, the Dutch TOTP?

It's not really my area, but couldn't this originally be from toppop, the Dutch TOTP? TopPop didn't start until 1970. I guess there's a chance it is from the earlier Dutch TV show 'Vjoew' though (the source of The Kinks' TOTP performances of 'Autumn Almanac' and 'Wonderboy'). The Dutch 192 TV channel sources material from all over the world. Incidentally, I've updated my TOTP book to include a screen shot of this performance, as well as a nice contribution from Mick Box of Uriah Heep which came too late for previous inclusion (anyone who buys the book now should have these additions thanks to the wonders of Amazon's POD [Print On Demand] service!).

Do they answer enquiries if you ask them when something is not certain?

It's intriguing that this clip (to the best of my knowledge) hasn't surfaced before- at least it's entirely new to me and I've not seen it in any TOTP compilations or retrospectives- ever!
I wonder therefore if it doesn't exist in the BBC archives but survives as an insert in an overseas show- or is it a shade too early for that? We know that practice was in place a couple of years later, hence the survival of King Crimson's 1970 TOTP appearance with 'Cat Food' as part of Hits A-Go-Go...

I think if it resided in the BBC archives it would've surfaced years ago (much/all of the Beeb's TOTP archives have been "liberated"). My guess is a European TV show too (60s TOTP clips have been found in Dutch, French and German archives), though it would be good to know for sure!
