A friend of mine has been asked by an actress friend of his for the following help! ...
This actress from 1959 appeared on the BBC, Associated-Rediffusion, ATV, ABC Weekend and Granada in many well-known, flagship drama series, along with appearing in films at the same time. In 1961, at the Bristol Old Vic, she was with Harry H Corbett in Hamlet, as she says, a far cry from Steptoe and Son.
Now 85 and still working, she has just seen what has been written about her on Wikipedia, and does not like it and wants to change it herself. Also the photo on there she has never seen before and wants to change that too.
She has found the section on Wikipedia, to amend the entry, yet it is so confusing for her, she has asked for help.
Can we give this fine actress, who we have much to thank for and whose many early appearances are listed as missing, some help, by setting down in plain English, a step by step guide, how to go about amending the Wikipedia entry in that section there.
Thanking you

Wouldn't it be easier if you did it for her, rather than creating an instruction manual that might not help and would only be used for one thing anyway?

On the other hand, some pages are simply neglected for lack of interest. Pages for lesser known tv series or actors (no offense meant), because of lack of contributors, might contain all sorts of messy, unsystematic information or unverified claims. E.g. the "Not Only But Also" page doesn't look very organised to me.
With enough proper citations, new information could be added. Wrong information on the other hand could simply be removed on the grounds that there is no citation to support it.
Besides, there isn't a manual for dealing with idiotic editors, a species that unfortunately exists. The type who want a citation that Jokey Smurf exists.

The first thing she can do is create her own Wiki account which is quite free and easy to do - Then she can edit the article on herself with the 'edit this page' tab in the top RH corner... now this is when the problems start, if she makes a statement about her self such as "Mary Bloggs played the spoons at the Dundee Odeon in 1961" The Wiki editors may ask to prove that with what they call a citation, such as say a link to a 1961 edition of the Daily Mirror which shows her playing the spoons.. Now because she is Mary Bloggs herself does not mean anything on Wiki, you will get the experienced editors who 'look after' the page and maybe Mary Bloggs fans themselves who think they know everything to know about Mary Bloggs who will say "I have never heard of Mary playing the spoons, that statement must be vandalism" the result being that the carefully written facts about herself by herself yesterday will be been completely erased the next day by somebody else.
..and that is why Wikipedia pages on personalities are often taken with a pinch of salt. She could apply for 'protection of the page' which would stop entries from mischievous casual and less trusted contributors saying stuff like "Mary now has 41 cats which she puts on leads and takes around the park", but not entries from trusted contributors who have got it all wrong.
As an actress IMHO she would be far better building up her profile on the IMBD .This I think is the place where people go to find out about actors. The IMDB obviously does not always get it right first time ...but eventually it does, through a network of trusted contributors and employed overseers.

Or indeed, her own website (i.e. marybloggs.com). Official websites are the first places I go to for accurate information on celebrities.

Word of warning: Getting stuff corrected, especially one's own credits, on the IMDb can drive people just as crazy as editing wikipedia!

Word of warning: Getting stuff corrected, especially one's own credits, on the IMDb can drive people just as crazy as editing wikipedia! Just some tips here, not aimed at you. The IMDB is very possessive of the data it gets and does not like losing it.So if you ever submit a correction which say is the removal of something...always have something to fill the data hole you have just left, this will speed up the evaluation process. The other thing with name corrections is that some people will just - say - just click the correction on actor John Smith UK page and write in the 'give reasons why you want this changed' and reply " John Smith UK was not in the The Invaders this was John Smith US" This is mostly not good enough for IMDB.You have to find John Smith US's page and link it properly on the correction page. The page will then turn green if your submission has a good chance of being accepted.
