Hi, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Scottish pop show 'Come Thursday' mentioned in this article on Scottish girl group The Modelles as a show they appeared on: scotbeat.wordpress.com/2019/11/08/the-modelles/Thins like how long it ran for, what guests appeared, and of course if anything survives (long shot of course but you never know). Thinking this could be a job for William McGregor if he's still at large on this forum!!)

According to the BBC Genome Come Thursday was a radio show on the BBC Home Scottish Service genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/407a203fe06c2cb87dae5e3ce325c578But what's the TV Times reference? I only have a London edition of the mag from that week. I can't find a reference for 'Words And Music'.

Just had a quick look through my old NME's for 1965 and I can't see anything yet. I think that my best option is to start going back to the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh and trail through the tabloid newspapers of the day. Bear with me thanks.

Well good luck with the NLS William. They still won't let you access the hard copy but there are always the microfilms I guess. Been spending more time at the Mitchell and Dundee since reopening.

ITV's Grampian had a pop show named 'Take It Easy' if that helps. Not to be confused with an entuirely different earlier show of the same title Southern ran. It probably goes without saying but, TV Times was the ITV listings mag... should be something in the northern editions with guests? Border Television had a show titled 'Beat In The Border' but it ran from 1962 to 1963. There's also this from the website: sixtiescity.net/PopTV/PopTV6064.shtmONE NIGHT STAND STV 27th February 1964 - 27th May 1964 Typical of the regional pop shows that sprouted in the wake of Merseybeat, this one covered beat talent from Scotland. Three amateur or semi-pro bands would play each week, with a professional band, usually from England in support. Pete Murray hosted the show which was produced by Liam Hood and directed by Jack Sampson. Auditions across the country were held to find thirty groups for the series, with each band allocated six minutes. Producer Liam Hood explained "It will be a useful experience for the Scots boys appearing with professional groups, who have been at the game longer than they have" and the show discovered some real talent with Lulu and The Luvvers among the acts on the first show. The Gaylords would evolve into The Marmalade while Peter's Faces would cut several sought after 45rpms. 14 episodes were recorded in Studio A at the Theatre Royal before an audience of 600. The Original Checkmates also joined each show. Starting at 9:40pm on Thursdays, the show moved to 6:30pm slot on 18th March. It was a prelude to the longer series DIG THIS which began in July.
Some of the artists appearing were: Thursday 27/02/64 9:40pm to 10:10pm: Tommy Dene and the Tremors, The 'A'Beats, Lulu and the Luvvers, The Original Checkmates. Thursday 05/03/64 9:40pm to 10:10pm: The Seven Sinners Showband, Beat Unlimited, The Golden Crusaders, The Zephyrs. Thursday 12/03/64 9:40pm to 10:10pm: The Copycatz, Tommy Trousdale and his Sundowners, Dave Berry and the Cruisers. Wednesday 18/03/64 6:30pm to 7pm: Dean Ford and the Gaylords, The Falcons, The Crusaders, The Rockin' Berries. Wednesday 25/03/64 6:30pm to 7pm: The Johnny Hudson Hi-Four, The Silhouettes, The Athenians, Wayne Gibson and the Dynamic Sounds. Wednesday 01/04/64 6:30pm to 7pm: The Ramblers Showband, The Strangers, Helene and the Kinsmen, The Contrasts. Wednesday 08/04/64 6:30pm to 7pm: Mark Dayton and the Honours, Phil and the Flintstones, The Red Hawks The Big Three. Wednesday 15/04/64 6:30pm to 7pm: The Kwintones, The Bluenotes, The Meteors, Rob Storme and the Whispers. Wednesday 22/04/64 6:30p to 7pm: The Phantoms, The Swinging Blue Jeans. Wednesday 29/04/64 6:30pm to 7pm: The Erle Blue Stars, Sol Byron and the Impacts, The Original Soundtracks, The Gamblers. Wednesday 06/05/64 STV 6:30pm to 7pm: Johnny Campbell and the Clansmen, The Aberdeen Phantoms, The Hawkes, The Trends. Wednesday 13/05/64 6:30pm to 7pm: Scotlands Dynamic Hornets, The Kimbos, The Ravens, Sandra and the Jet Blacks. Wednesday 20/05/64 6:30pm to 7pm: The Nighthawks, The P.G.Flintstones, Tony Rivers and the Castaways. Wednesday 27/05/64 6:30pm to 7pm: The Ardennes, Tommy and the Apaches, The VIPs, Peters Faces.

I did'nt know that they have stopped access to hard copies of newspapers (damn) I've been to the Mitchell library a few times so I'll need to find out their policy. I've never been to the Dundee library but would love to try it out one day.

I’ve only been able to find information about one series called ‘Come Thursday’ and that’s the BBC radio show that has already been mentioned. This started on the Scottish Home Service in October 1964 and the final edition was broadcast on the Scottish Radio 4 in March 1968. It featured lots of Scottish pop groups and folk groups. I don't think there was a TV series called 'Come Thursday'.
‘Words and Music’ was mentioned earlier. This was a 20 minute show that was shown in the Grampian region only on Friday nights from 16 July 1965 to 13 August 1965. The regular guests on this seemed to be Julie Grant, Glen Mason, Doug Kynoch and the Johnny Scott Quartet. The Modelles made their TV debut on the show on 06 August 1965.
By the way, that ‘TV Times’ cover from August 1965 in the ‘Scotbeat’ article shows the Modelles on the set of ‘Granada in the North’, which was a late-night version of ‘Scene at 6.30’.

The problem in Edinburgh is, as you will be aware William, the newspaper archives are not stored onsite and have to be ordered and transported to the George IV Bridge site. Possibly due to staff issues they have not restored this service yet and appear to have no immediate plans to do so. Up until last week you had to book a (maximum) three hour slot at the Mitchell but you can just turn up now as I did on Tuesday. The only time restriction now is the opening hours. They like you to view the microfilms there too - understandably - but you can request the newspaper ledgers. They let me view their late 1950s/early 60s Sunday Posts and some later Daily Record. Dundee Central Library currently requires a booking in advance should you be planning a trip up north! As with Glasgow, really nice people in the Special Collections/Local History departments.

Thanks for the update Ronnie, your of course spot on about the NLS having to transport the newspaper archives from their Causewayside offices. I usually ordered what I wanted to research the day before to save me from waiting on the day. Then I'd go to the librarian and they'd bring the binders through to the large reading room. Thanks for also letting me know about the Mitchell library and your visit. I have been there a few times and they are indeed very helpful. I also looked through the actual Sunday Posts from the 60's looking for HIBS related match reports. I also used their microfilm machines. Maybe one day I'll have a wee stop off in Dundee and check out their library Cheers

Thanks for your replies William, very glad to see you're still around!
Well, thanks to the corrections by Mark Dixon and Tony Rees it would appear I messed up somewhat and 'Come Thursday' was indeed a radio show. Apologies for this mis-direction: I should have looked more carefully!
As you may have surmised, my main reason for asking re: this show was to try and see if any contemporary footage of The Modelles could be out there, and thus I really should have worded my query differently. Looking more carefully at the article, I see it does make reference to them appearing on 'TV’s “Words and Music' in August 1965 (likely the show the TV Times photo is from).. so that would seem to be a confirmed TV appearance and a show I'd be interested in knowing any more about. Unfortunately I just looked it up on Kaleidoscope's Tv Brain directory and I couldn't find an entry for a show of this title in this year! As it's likely an ITV show I'm guessing there will be nothing on the Genome site.
With this in mind William, would I be able to modify my request for and info you could find on a 1965 show 'Words and Music' and any TV appearances by/info on The Modelles in general? I've edited the thread title to refect this. Kind regards and thanks again, Adam.

One of the newspaper clippings indicates that Grampian TV gave the girls their first TV "screen try out" and they were set for a guest appearance on Alex Sutherland's "Take It Easy"
