First fully animated Hartnell story too! Mention of Season 17 meanwhile is surprising (but welcome) considering that Season 20 has been widely touted to be the next ‘Collection release for ages. Again, if this info is accurate then the release date, right on top of Christmas, marks a potentially parlous shift in release scheduling. Especially given that many folks’ festive budgeting may not extend to something they expect released much earlier in the year… Perhaps this alleged December date is to fulfil a Doctor Who-shaped hole left in BBC product releases due to a lack of Nu Who material (? - I wouldn’t know, don’t watch the new series having long been encumbered by the ravages of good taste and exacting standards ).

Galaxy 4 wouldn’t have been high up on my list for animation but Airlock was pretty good 👍
Season 17 is a but like the curate’s egg, obviously there’s City of Death but then there’s Creature from the Pit and Nightmare of Eden. Apart from CoD and, hopefully, an episodic Shada it’s pretty thin gruel. It has to be done sometime and I’d buy it.

Galaxy 4 is a favorite of mine. Would love to see more of it returned, but an animation would be great. I know it's not anyone's cup of tea, but I find it such an interesting story. Great acting by Stephanie Bidmead as well.

Yes, I was reading about these 2 sets last night on Twitter - they had been spotted on a legitimate overseas website (Swiss I think) up for sale with those 2 release dates mentioned. Galaxy 4 links back to the rumour we heard about from the Mirror (same source as Evil of the Daleks and Abominable Snowman a year ago - which was half right so far!). Chats on that in the "Hartnell animation-What would you like" thread, currently sitting on page 2.
So this is very promising - great to have a Hartnell story be released! And Season 17 - lots of juicy extra's no doubt! Hopefully we get the official news soon so I can get pre-ordering!

It was all on Twitter and here is the link to the Swiss site they flagged for Galaxy 4: www.1advd.ch/suchen.asp?sb=galaxy+4And you can search on there for Season 17 also (just type in "Doctor Who the Collection" in the search box to get the list including the standard S23 and limited S17). So everyone is hopeful they have jumped the gun and we will get official news soon!

Hi, yes online and the info quoted the same link as per above by RhysH it was mentioned that the animation should be fairly easy with minimal characters and scenery. not high up on my list, I would have preferred smugglers or highlanders but I’m happy with any animations.

I personally think city of death is the most over rated classic who story ever. In saying that I'm not a fan of douglas Adam's both in and out of who (although pirate planet is good) I'l still buy it so I have the full set and thinking about it it will be the last season I buy with that mind set so it's all gold from then on. Galaxy 4 would be my second favourite pick for a hartnell animation closely followed by the celestial toy maker. I just hope it's done in the evil style and not web......assuming any of it is true 😅

To me it’s one of those stories where everything comes together, that’s what, to me, makes a “classic”. The JN-T era would see overseas locations, but in most cases they added little - Arc of Infinity and Two Doctors for example. With a story revolving around the Mona Lisa - probably the most famous painting in the world - Paris “worked” and added to the story. Julian Glover and Catherine Schell were well used guest stars - and John Cleese and Eleanor Bron’s cameos worked well. By then it had become the Tom Baker show and the humour/jokiness dominated but in CoD it was harnessed appropriately. The special effects and model work were good, everything worked. As with much of the Hinchcliffe era it’s something that I can pull out over forty years after it was made, put the DVD in the player and be guaranteed a treat 👍

Indeed, it impressively elevates itself far above the inevitably limiting child-orientated remit of the show via some masterfully interwoven subtext to explore the true nature of art and the ‘value’ it renders to society. As such all of the characters perceive art (and the Mona Lisa specifically of course)differently: Duggan views art merely as a financial investment to be protected at all costs, the Countess for the ephemeral social clout and prestige its acquisition bestows, Scaroth as a means to raise hard currency to fund a higher cause and Romana as a dispensable expressionist medium that even “computers” can credibly emulate. But of course it’s ultimately the Doctor himself who comprehends the truest and purest worth inherent of artistic endeavour: beauty. Regardless, throw in some wry digs at the expense of the bumptious art critic fraternity (courtesy of Cleese and Bron) and ‘City of Death’ is nigh on perfect! You just don’t (normally) get that sort of philosophical cogitation in ‘kids’ TV. Neither then and most certainly not now…

The characters are great, the humour advances the story, the philosophical discussions about art are very clever, and the way the plot threads are tied together is quite clever. I think I like season 17 more than most. The OTT humour does sometimes get to me because it undermines the serious parts of each story.

Season 20 is stuck in limbo until they can safely get the cast to Amsterdam. I certainly wouldn't be expecting it until 2022 at the earliest. A Tom Baker season was very likely (although most people were expecting Season 15 or 16). I would still be expecting the new series to be getting a release in November/December but the schedules have never really lined up with classic releases.

I suppose a Peter/Janet/Sarah reunion in Amsterdam makes a lot of sense but, at the moment, I’m not planning any foreign trips as I hate masks and the situation can change very quickly. But a BluRay Season 17 suggests Tom and/or Lalla - possibly with others - in Paris?
