From r/DoctorWhumour I first heard of the show from my grandfather, who was born in Pakistan in '48. He told me he used to listen to it on the radio when he was younger. I think I was around 10-11 at the time, and I distinctly remember he was the one who told me the name of the show Doctor Who. Later, perhaps a year or two so, I either looked up my school library for any Doctor Who books or saw some by chance and remembered the conversation. Sometime later, I've watched most of the show in lockdown, read a ton of the books, a couple of audio stories like Shada, so I mention it to him, and he doesn't remember our conversation. Even more than that, he doesn't even know about the show. It's really quite curious because other than myself, the only people I know who are familiar with the show are people to whom I personally introduced it. So either I was imagining it, or he forgot about it, which seems unlikely since his memory is quite good. So I looked up, but haven't really found any instance of a radio run. Do you guys know of any? www.reddit.com/r/DoctorWhumour/comments/opz8lk/was_there_ever_a_radio_run/

If he was close to the border, it's possible what he heard were radio signals coming from Iran; the William Hartnell eps that aired there in the late 60s/early 70s were transmitted with two soundtracks - Arabic (with Persian narration) over the TV, and the English audio broadcast over the radio. I don't know how strong radio signals were, but maybe the signals from Tehran could be picked up in other parts of Iran, and also Pakistan?

The OP has told me he was living on and off in Pakistan and US at the time and has confirmed it was probably the 60s-70s

He has now told me that the soundtracks were English and that he lived in Punjab and New York The Punjab is quite some distance from the Iranian border, and there is some 1340+ miles / 2160+ kms between Tehran and Lahore. While the time-frame of late 60s/70s fits with Iranian broadcasts, that's an incredible distance for radio signals to travel. I'm not sure what the terrain is in that part of the world - presumably deserts and mountains - which would also affect signal reach. When he was in New York, it's possible he saw the Canadian broadcasts of Hartnell in 1965, but only if he was living near the Canadian border.

I certainly remember listening to Slipback on the BBC World Service while in Asia in 1986. No reason not to think the earlier broadcasts were also aired.
